not to get off topic here, but Holy Crap "jdtemple", gas out your way is $3.46/gal??? Ours is around $2.80, and everyone is bitching about how high it is. WOW, if it were that much here, people wouldn't be able to afford to drive to work. Our local town is #2 in the nation per capita for unemployment.

if youre worried about it dont do it. you wont be happy. if you dont regear, the truck is sluggish and your mileage takes a big hit.

Mine dropped barely any with 285s on normal driving. Although if I'm running 90 on the highway or punching it around town, the mpgs are TERRIBLE. Like 13-14. But with gentle driving you shouldn't notice much difference. Unless you buy some super heavy mud terrains or something like that.

False. Me and most other people that run 285s don't regear and the truck runs great. When I'm offroad I usually just manually put the truck in 2nd or 3rd gear to keep the revs up a little more, but other than that it's fine.

Eh, it's definitely more sluggish if its 285 M/Ts. I noticed the difference.

But it's not enough to make it worth regearing or cause any problems. Again, it's a 4WD truck, not a roadster.

i just took a 2200 mile trip last week and my highway mileage definately dropped with the 285's. i averaged about 14-15 mpg, but thats driving 70-80mph, going through many passes (the rockies for example), and 60+ mph head winds. i suppose i could better mileage if i drove slower, but my time is worth more than 2 extra miles per gallon :)

i actually get better gas mileage in the city (<50 mph) than i do on the highway.

you can check my fuely link for exact numbers.

edit: i have mickey thompson mtz's so i am sure they suck more gas than all terrains.

I had to Google "hooning." Okay, so what's going on? Oh yeah, you'll be fine just get the 285s already. Worst case scenario you don't like them and you will probably have no problem finding someone to trade you their 265s.

Most of the complaints I see on here are from people who have MTs, which are generally heavy as crap in any size. If you are looking at MTs, then these are legit complaints, but as for my lightweight Yoko ATs, I don't feel much difference. Also I went with an aftermarket wheel that's much lighter than stock, so that prob helped offset some weight.

lol i like how you contradicted yourself. people who say they dont notice a difference are lieing to themselves. Probably dont want to accept the truth.

Actually not a contradiction at all. A 4" taller tire than my stockers create a taller gearing meaning I need to run in a gear lower offroad at the same speed. NOT because of a lack of power.

Also I have one of the lightest 285s on 16s setups available, which is easily 20lb+ per wheel lighter than if you have some steelies/MTs or similar weight. Unsprung weight can make a huge power difference so my experience is easily much different than somebody with a heavier setup.

don't know much about weight differences in tires, but how many lbs is a "heavy" tire? "light" tire?

well, the stock rugged trails are 37 pounds each and the mickey thompsons that i have are 58 pounds each. so the stock tires are the baseline (light) and i would consider the mickey thompsons as heavy compared to stock.

there are other 285's that are even heavier. for example, a general grabber all terrain is 61 pounds each:
    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...GRAT2OWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

the heavier tire creates more rotational mass which makes it "harder" for the vehicle to start and stop. how much harder depends on tread design, gearing, enginer power, tire inflation, etc...

to be honest, you dont get 285's for the fuel mileage. you get it for looks and performance. so going into it with that in mind, you wont be suprised at your lower mpg. you can try to select a 285 tire that will get better gas mileage than another 285, but i would just pick one based on what you are going to use it for.

    I have a 1.5in spacer lift (5100's are in the mail) and I'm running 285's with a 4.5BS rim.

I chopped out a fair bit of plastic to make it work. Also grinded a bit off the pinch welds and sanded maybe 2mm off the cab mount just to take off the square edges in case it hit. So far I have not rubbed, but if I do when I drive some rougher terrain I'll do the cab mount chop. I'm going to set my Billies to 1.75" which in theory is 1/4" higher than I am now.

I wouldn't worry about power loss running 285's. I've got the 4.0 with a 6spd and it still halls ass pretty good for a V6 truck.

Yeah, I think I'll give the 285's a shot. I found some Cooper STT's that I really like, and can get them at a very good price. Worst comes to worst, I can just get smaller ones later. I really like the way my taco accelerates, I feel that it is quite fast off the line, and find it exciting to nail it and have the get up that it does. I just didn't want to lose all of the funness of driving it, Sure it will be fun to look at with the 285's, but I just hope it's still fun to drive.

    Thanks for all the responses
