I worked for a dealership and you're never going to beat them. What you want is a deal you can live with. Get financing ahead of time from a bank, then make your deal, then tell them you have a check and watch them burn. If you want to screw with the sales guy refuse a test drive.

Did you adjust for inflation? $26k in 1996 is about $42k in today's $$.

Sold my 12yr old 2005 DCLB SR5 to private party with 135k miles on it for $11,500. Still see the guy from time to time and thanks me for not trading it in when I bought my '17. Feel like we both made out well:)

I traded my 2013 DCSB TRD Sport with 70K miles for my now 2019 TRD Pro. Dealership gave me $24K trade in, I was pleased.

Two weeks ago i traded my 2017 trd sport (with almost 20k miles) on a 2019 trd sport. They gave me 30k. Second buy from this dealership and same sales guy. I wanted a cement sport with a bit more stuff and my sales guy found me what i wanted. Took two days to get it. I've owned 2 gen 2s and now 2 gen 3s....never test drove any of them. Actually bought the 2019 completely by texting with my sales guy...until signing paperwork etc. The kbb or Edmunds estimate for high amount i believe was 29.5K. As Geraldos Taco said above, you are not going to beat them...you just have to come away feeling you did okay. On holding value....i traded one of my gen 2s in on a new ram 1500....i forget what they gave me but i remember i was shocked at how much they offered me for the Tacoma and how bad they wanted it. On this most recent deal, i was shocked that they didn't even look or drive it.

Are the dealers just randomly giving you guys offers or are you asking?

I would imagine a lot has to do with...
    - dealer
    - what part of country and local market
    - mileage
    - vehicle condition ....off-roaded a lot...dings....mods....and I'm sure other factors.

When i negotiate with dealer or sales rep, i like to stay with rounded numbers...by the 500 dollar or 1k. On my last buy a couple of weeks ago i probably would have been happy with the 29.5 that kbb or Edmunds gave me on line. I told my sales guy what evidently was a good offer to his manager and the sales guy said 30k trade in. I also want a bottom line figure or out the door number...i don't want to hear about taxes, prep or other bs...i want them to come back with an out the door final number...down and dirty...quick and easy. I also turn down all of the numerous add ons when you sit down woth the financial guy. Get me in there and where do i sign. As i mentioned before, this time they did not even look at all at my 2017 much less test drive it...but they had been servicing it since i bought it from them before...and it really was in perfect condition.

I went in just curious as to what they would give me for it, told the salesman I had a cash offer of $23K so he offered me $24K trade in.

Most Dealers will offer you no more than 1k back from book(nada usually). They will often times "show" more on your trade if that is your hot button. However they are only moving FEG profit from the new sale over to make it appear as though you are getting more.

Look up your average trade value on Nada, Up it 2k and list it online. If after 2 weeks you still have it trade. Otherwise Tacomas sell easily enough, have a lil patience and retain more of your value by selling it yourself.

In February 2019, I traded in a 2018 TRD Off Road 4x2 with 6,942 miles for $29,500. I purchased it for $32,495 about eight months prior.

Edit: This was a trade for a 2019 Highlander LE not a Tacoma. My apologies to OP.
