I’m in a tight spot right now. I recently bought a nice clean red limited second gen 4Runner with no rust and 146,000 from the og owner. I’m doing the head gasket job and after that it will be a nice clean good vehicle. However I’m thinking of selling it for a couple thousand after the gasket and a few other little things. It should sell for quite a bit I hope (maybe not since it’s a second gen). But basically I’m broke and don’t have money to build it out. I’m just wondering how much building a third gen 4Runner or pickup or first gen Tacoma would cost to build out. Just a rough estimate. I’m thinking if I can sell the second gen for a couple thousand I can get another cheap old Toyota and build it out with the second gen money. But I have no idea how much that would cost. So preferably people with third or second gens answer because I’m not going to be buying a brand new fifth gen. Thanks in advance and reply’s are much appreciated. I already asked the 4Runner forums but why not here to.

What are asking when you say build out? There’s so many levels you could go to- are you asking about wheels/tires/lift? Asking about making your vehicle very capable off road?

The answer could be from a couple thousand for the first option or a couple tens of thousands for the second and a whole lot in between

A safe guess for a good starting point is probably $5000. That's ballparking $2k for new wheels and tires, $1.5k for a decent lift, $500 for a reasonable winch, and $1k to throw at a bumper or skid plates. It really depends what you want. Of course you could always hunt for used stuff or wait for big sales, but that's a starting point for what I'd look at doing.

I have put about $1000 into my 3rd gen, and it went into an exhaust re-route (the original exhaust loops under the transfer case and now it is flush with underbody) and engine/transmission/cat-guard protection skids. The skids are sellable if I sell the truck. Oil drain valve and H9 headlight bulbs.

I have not started on sliders, ditch lights, bumpers, grill-lights, etc. ...

My finances are quite stable, which is why I could spend the $1000.

Uhm, you can get a lot done on a stock 3rd Gen 4Runner with some quality tires :burp:

    20210806_152818.jpg

    With that said, I wouldn't waste money on a 2nd Gen 4Runner

That. Know the platform your building before you buy it. 2nd Gen options are more limited and the 3.slow is generally a pile of shit. So budget in another few grand for a 3.4 conversion.

That’s why I’m thinking of selling it because it also doesn’t have any lockers. But as far as second gens go I have my self a pretty nice one so I’m hoping I can get a couple thousand out of it.

plain and simple, if you need to budget for vehicle mods, you're doing it wrong.

fix your finances first, then do what you want for fun with the truck.

unfortunately, i'm in the same boat. it's why my truck is stock currently. i want to add wheels, a prinsu rack, custom headlights, tail lights, custom roll bar, 3 winches, and more strobe lights than any sane person could ever want. but bills come first.

What if I told you I have over 9k in.... this?

Sure doesn't look like 9k worth of mods, does it?:oops: It's still a ho-hum Tacoma.

Drive and enjoy what you have. Mod money is piss-away money. Do it only if you get your entertainment value from it. They are still more than fun, stock.

I think I'm closing in on 20k and I still have quite a bit on the list to go. Shit can get expensive really quick.
