My last truck was a Dodge Dakota. I took out a 5 year loan and managed to pay it off in 3 years. I kept putting the truck payments into a savings account for my next truck. That went on for a few years and then it tapered off but I still managed to put money away for my next truck. I had that truck for 14 years and then paid cash for my Taco. I was able to put a pretty good down payment on the Dakota because I did the same thing with my previous truck, another Dakota. This is why you see old people driving nice cars. If you stay with this plan, after a few vehicles, you have a pretty sizable vehicle fund. It's another reason why leasing is stupid.

Eh, I'm not in the anti-lease crowd... It works out perfect for the wifemobile/kidhauler.

She'll always have something brand new with a full warranty and maintenance plan for the entire lifecycle of the vehicle. At most, you're putting a set of tires on it. Rinse and repeat every 3 years.

And you don't get a call that she is on the side of the road and you have to go deal with it. Assuming new vehicles don't break down mostly.

I've read if one wants to pay cash it's in our interest (pun intended) to negotiate the price as to finance, pay a month, or two then pay it off. MSRP comes down more with financing than with cash because they think they'll make money anyway over the loan period.

Right, because past performance guarantees future performance.

I hope it continues to work out for you.

    Congrats!

I should get my title in a couple weeks.

Paid mine off last Friday. Called them to see if I could pay it off online instead of sending a check. They said I could but would have to make 2 payments, $10K is the max for a single online payment.

Thanks man, and congrats to you too! That's lame about a maximum payment, but $10K is the limit on a deposit at my bank or even a metal purchase at the coin store without them reporting it. Thank goodness the govt cares so much about us that they wanna make sure we spend our money correctly......

I haven't had a car payment since 1985. I bought a 1980 Mustang in 1982 for $5000 at the local Ford dealer. Ever since then, I've put money away monthly in a car fund. It is now up to $400 every 2 weeks. When it's time for a new car, I buy it. I bought my 1st new Tacoma Limited in 2004 and sold it in 9/2018. Then I bought a 3rd gen Tacoma Limited in 9/2018. Man, I miss that 2004.

Not bragging. Just trying to maybe motivate a younger person on other ways to buy things instead of going into debt up to your ears.

Very wise. I wish I did that! My Tacoma was the first vehicle I bought for cash and I’m 52 years old.

I bought my 1st new at 46. It was the 2004 Tacoma. I've owned a lot of used over the years. I didn't get serious about putting money away into my car fund until 2001 though. New cars are so much more reliable these days. I've become spoiled. I don't even do my oil changes anymore. The way the 3rd gen Tacomas are though, I'm not sure I'll want Walmart doing them after the free ones run out at the dealer.

    Words of wisdom.

My Tacoma is the second brand new ride I've ever owned. Always bought them a couple years old and saved a lot. Tried that with the Tacoma's, but I found I could get a new one for a few grand more than a used one.

I'm by no means rich, hell probably don't even fall into what they say is middle class now day, but I'm good at saving money.

Problem with a lot of people is that they'll be in debt on a new truck and still sink mass $$ into mods on it. If you can afford it...more power to you, but too many people want everything NOW!
