i give 15-20%. it all depends on how the service was. there have been a few times when i barely give any because of very poor service yet i have had times where i havent had a problem giving 20% or more cause of the excellent service

when you are a regular at a bar ask yourself this..."Do I want to be known as the asshole that never tips or the guy the bartenders are glad to see because I do the right thing?"

I always depend my tip on the service, there are places i go for the food and there are places i go for service, But i have a couple that i can expect both from and its there where i tip especially good. No matter what i leave at least a five, Even if it wasnt great service, We all have our bad days, And good karma is always a good thing.

It's not always about being cheap to make a statement about shitty service. Shitty service = shitty tip & a shitty tip should be a tip to a server that they somehow failed. I will not reward lameness nor will I justify not rewarding lameness either. Good service is a perception of the patron, tips are not something automatically due like tax. That being said, there are certainly tons of cheapo asshats just looking for excuses to not leave tips and feel for those in the service industry having to deal with them. My tips are a reflection of service received and if I was concerned about not tipping due to monetary constraints I wouldn't be going out anyway. Bars...have at them. I am happy to drink at home if I feel the need. Cheaper, safer, no cops & no waking up beside any 2 @ 10 & 10 @ 2s. Of course I am not out for that anyway having all of what I want at home.:D

If you ever plan on returning to a spot, it behooves you to not pull the one penny trick. You'll end up with a protein-rich meal or drink next time. Extra shitty service? Come on...even 20% of any tab ain't that much dinero.

I usually tip 18-20%. I've been a server for almost 2 years so even when I don't get great service, I'm pretty generous.

Serving is something I do believe everyone should have to do at least once.

I tip really well, normally over 20%, however the service definitely dictates the amount I give.

I have no problem not tipping if it is not earned! ;)

Depends on service, starts around 15% and goes up or down. I was a server for years and that was and still is, in my opinion, the common practice. I will say however there are certain ethnic groups that will tip less because it is part of their culture.

+1. I totally agree. I can be generous for good service and on occasion I can be stingy if warranted too. I understand that everyone has bad days and I have bad days too, but I do my best not spread my bad day to others.

THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF TIPPING.
YOU picked to work a job that requires you to supplement your base pay with tips...so YOU should act like you wanna get tipped. Keep a drink reasonably full, get the order right, be polite...The easy things that make a meal out nice and keep you getting a decent tip. If you blow the simple things- You haven't earned anything...so even if it's not that much dinero-I'm not giving it to you.

I chose to work a job that requires a fair amount of overtime....and I don't get paid any more for working late...There are a variety of other benefits that I get in return...So I get my job done right and life goes on.

Actually, I'VE never worked F and B. And like I qualified my statement above, I stated it behooves you to give 20% if you plan on going back to a joint.

And I work a fair amount of overtime too with no compensation.

    Thanks.

Sorry for assuming you were/are a server-"Your 20% isn't much" comment rings very much like one.

And if you work overtime with no compensation- You know what I am saying. You signed on to get paid what you get paid with whatever perks or benefits you get. You want to do a good job-So you spend the extra time you need to do it right. If a server wants to pad their income-They need to do a good job to earn the extra-Not just expect it to be handed to them no matter what....

I hope you don't assume that is the attitude most servers have. I work my ass off at my job, not for a tip but to make a guests experience kick ass...the tip is just an awesome way of saying thanks. And I also know when I've failed to give the service that I'm capable of, and if I see that my tip suffered, I know that I deserved it.

That's the way that I see it too. I believe that good workers with good attitudes get stiffed a lot less than subpar workers with poor attitudes.
