Required minimum is much lower for F&B servers than other industries (at least in most states). Many are paid next to nothing in their paychecks, but do well enough in the long run with all of that hideable cash. ;)

Also at issue for many servers in the States is lack of provided health coverage...alot of mom and pop establishments simply can't afford coverage; not an issue under your parents roof, but quite a problem later in life.

Our health care system is a wee bit different from Canada's ; )

The responsibility should be on the business to pay the servers in most places. If the restaurant aint super fancy then either let me serve myself or pay your waiters/waitresses a decent wage.

I rarely get "great service," but i usually tip 15-20%. Just seems like a waste when i have to pay for someone to keep my water somewhat filled (again, service is way better in nicer places).

Ok yeah I can see that. Some people just can't take the pressure (serving is a stressful job) and get bogged down. I know I get pretty mad if the server is ignoring my table, but I also get mad when they ask if everything is OK every 2 minutes. There is a happy medium there.

    yup;)

would you rather they pay the servers minimum wage and charge 11 dollars for that same burger? If tipping wasn't part of the culture and the server's salary had to be picked up by the restaurant, they would just pass that back to you as higher prices anyway.

I always think about it this way... usually the difference between a 15% tip and a 25% tip is 2-3 dollars. I won't miss that money, but the server sure does appreciate it.

Depends on the service. If my drink never runs dry and my order is correct and the server comes by a few times to check on us I leave 20%. If the service is less than that I still leave 15% because there are a lot of factors involved that the server can't always control. You have to really piss me off for me to leave less than 15%, I don't remember the last time I was that pissed off.

you obviously have never worked in the restaurant business.
I don't get it, you are basically punishing the server that works at a more expensive restaurant?

Alot of people have not, and alot of people don't plan on it.

You think the restaurant business is bad.
Try working in residential air conditioning.

I don't get tipped for fixing people's systems so they are comfortable.
Why should I tip someone because they provided me comfort while I'm eating?
I get paid my hourly wage and that's it.
It might not be logic to some, but it's logic to me..because I work in the industry.

I actually don't work in residential anymore, just commercial but still :spy:

Not to split hairs, but as some type of trained tech, I'm sure your hourly wage is more than the $2 +, most the the servers seem to be making in the States.
