How much does the dealer matter???

Have a few quotes on a Leer topper from different dealers. Some are platinum dealers, some gold, and some regular. The quotes vary by about $200-400 for the same exact topper and options.

So my question is how much does the dealer status matter with these? Can anyone speak from experience? I don’t mind paying more if it’s really worth it, but I’m having a hard time seeing $400 worth of value from one place to the next.

 

That would depend on what else they give me for that extra bucks if it is the exact same top nothing extra why waste the extra cash?

 

Yeah I’m just wondering if install, warranty claims, or something else is better through the platinum/gold dealers?

 

Your dealer is very important, especially if they have Tacoma experience. Making sure it is sealed up well, and it is wired properly.

 

I had the same range of estimates and I used it to my advantage to get the price down lower. One was closer then the others but not the lowest so I started working on them. I didn’t mind driving for the better deal but why if it worked. I plan on doing the install myself so I was able to get them to further discount my total price.

 

The dealer is KEY.

All the shell manufacturers turn out problem shells, and they do not deal whatsoever with the consumer. If you order a shell and it arrives with issues, or if your shell develops issues, the only way you’re getting anywhere with a solution is your dealer.

Can’t stress this enough - go with the best dealer you can find and buy from whomever that is.

I hate to disagree, but. I have been buying pickups since 1980, all had caps, shells,canopies. The difference in install has been huge. From bad electrical hookups, that failed, junk weather seals that leak like a sieve, installer damage to my truck and or to the cap. I work as a carpenter and my truck is my toolbox, and having, water, snow,all over expensive tools is unacceptable. Fix your wiring in January because of blown fuses and you will understand.

 

Yes I agree with “gold standard “, all based on sales volume. Everyone has a bad day, or a new guy. I had a high volume Leer dealer install a cap when the newer “ over the bed rail” fiberglass came out. They broke two corners during install, I looked it over prior to install. We can send it back, it will be 2 months. I fixed it myself and lived with it. Not major damage but I just paid you $30000.00, and you want me to wait another 2 months.

 

This is why I’ll be doing the install myself- not everyone has the same work ethic and sometimes it’s better to do things yourself just so it will get done right the first time.

Ive only had 1 cap previously but bought it used and had to do the install myself which was also on a composite bed. Reading here about common leak spots so I’ll address those and make a plan of attack ready to go on delivery

 

Thanks for all the feedback here guys. Ordered today. Was able to get the most expensive guys down closer to the others, but they do a lot of Tacoma’s, so paying a trivial amount more was worth it to me. Now I wait for delivery!

 

Hopefully delivery will happen before we get a snow storm. Send some pics.

 

They said it’s normally 3-4weeks this time of year because guys are are trying to get covered up before hunting season. But I went with the 100XR from Leer, which is their highest volume production, so it could be only 2 weeks. Pics to come soon.

 

Great choice i went with that, just hard to get the front corners to not leak.

 

I've already packed the ever living crap out of the corner rails (inside and out) with butyl tape mashed in everywhere I can. I assume I'll still get a tiny bit after that, but I can live with it as long as it's not a river.

 

I just put in the rubber bed mat so anything just goes under and out the drain hole, will deal with the few little spots i missed once Pheasant season is over! Really happy with this cap and got it fully optioned out as I basically living out of the truck during the season. M dealer is 5hrs away but i went with them as their service and after sales help is amazing, only local place has horrible service, and the prices were within $100.
