Sadly, not uncommon. To me it's a lack of professionalism, or just flat out lazy.

He wants to be your 'friend' and do you 'favors'. Don't fall for it.

Nothing wrong with being polite and conversational, but he's not gonna be your new bud. His job is to make money for himself and his dealership. Period.

Follow the guidelines others here have posted re the core price of the truck first, then less discounts, then your trade, then consider your financing options.

DO NOT concentrate on the payment amount. Or at least don't let them know that. There's all kinds of ways to juggle that to make you hear what you want to hear.

Also, if you follow the path suggested, your trade 'value' will likely be much less than you expect. IE a 'real' number. Which is fine. The suggestion to get a CarMax quote first was a good one. If they offer you significantly more than that, you have more room in the price to work down.

And consider selling your 'trade' yourself. Just make the price high enough to compensate for the tax offset plus a few hundred for your trouble.

Do a lot of research on your vehicle too . Check Kelly blue book and look and see what they are selling for on autotrader and else where and decide what yours worth then stand your ground . They love to.make easy money on the trades . It helps if you have title in hand so that they can move your vehicle quick .

For reference, when I bought my '17 TRD Off Road Manual (October 2017) they came down to $31,500 after some haggling - I also had a $5,000 trade.

I bought mine during 'Toyota Truck Month' Season when they offer the 0.9% and seem to come down a bit on price. If I had bought an auto I'm guessing it would have been roughly $1,000 more...

That's a damn good price otd. Currently in the market and a friend just picked up a 19 Trd or 4x4 from that exact Toyota dealer yesterday. 5k down still came out to 36k.

It was a 2017 in November of 2017 so that may have helped. They were a pretty good dealership to work with. Didn't have to get shifted from room to room with scare tactics of why I need every warranty possible.

People with money treat negotiating like a sport.
It’s game day, take some snacks, arrive well rested, bring a notepad and make notes as they tell you stuff. Be prepared to walk out and continue it later in the week. Collect some business cards from other dealers and occasionally flip through them when you aren’t getting your way. If you spend an extra hour and save $500, you’ve just made $500 an hour.

I searched the internet for a bit and found exactly what I was looking for. I called up the dealer and said I will sign today for this price. Sales guy said let me talk to my manager and call you back. 5 minutes later he said you have a deal and I picked it up after work and drove it home that night. OTD price of 33125 on a Super White DCSB TRD offroad 4x4. Like others have said there is no need to go into the dealership until you have a set price from them. Telling them you will sign today if they hit YOUR price is a very powerful tool.

    1. Get your financing straight before you buy using a credit union or something similar.
    2. Contact 25 or so dealerships via email with what you're looking for, what options you are flexible on, and ask for an out the door price.
    3. When you get back the quotes, compare and see if any dealerships will do better. Some won't want to deal, that's fine, just move on.
    4. Do not go to any of the dealerships until you have an out the door price. Don't go!
We did this and paid less than $30K for my truck (before TT&L). We also only spent about 20 minutes at the dealership picking up the truck. I did drive about 200 miles to get it though.
