That's decent for starting salary. Keep in mind you'll get your summers off and still get paid so that's nice, and your salary will increase with more time that you put in.

I live about 35 miles north of Dallas, and if you are only supporting yourself you can definately live off of that income. My wife is a teacher here and she makes around 45k a year, so the starting salaries are pretty decent. If you arent planning on living in some ritzy part of the metroplex you would be more than fine.

depends on where you're coming from... Texas generally has a much lower standard of living than any of the coastal states... plus no state income tax, sales tax only unless you buy than of course property taxes apply

I find the responses interesting. Cost of living in an area is a large factor for sure.

I always find it eye opening and a humble reminder to remember the following. Half of the working population in this country makes about $36K a year or less. That starting salary puts you right in the middle of the group and you are not even working a full year. (like a regular job) No, I am not anti teacher before you start the rant.

Also remember that most states have special perks for teachers like low interest home loans and so on. It may be different for a visa worker, but it sounds like they are trying to work it toward a long term position.

It is good starting money. All those areas with the really high cost of living are the ones that have been having the most pain as reality starts to balance out the overinflated areas.

First year teacher here in NC, we get $32,000 a year before taxes. Getting paid 10 months, I take home about $2300 a month.

Hey Ed, how are you? I agree that cost of living for the area is gonna be one of the biggest factors. I don't make that much and I'm working for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Like someone else said, should be a state job with decent benefits, probably union, summers off. You could do alot worse. I make a little less than 25G and my wife makes a little more. 50G's supporting a family of 4. If it weren't for all the debt I have, I'd be pretty comfy.

    This.

You can live just fine on 40k in many areas. In large cities, that's less likely. Take home on 40k will probably be in the high 20thousands somewhere, give or take a few grand on deductions and tax credits...

So, say around 2,000 a month to live off of after 10% in savings.

Time to contact some people and see how far 2 grand gets you in Dallas.

thanks a lot for your inputs, down here seems like a lot, but of course, earning dollars and spending pesos, is not the same as earning dollars and spending dollars

That's about how much I make and I live pretty good in south texas. Got my truck, nice 2 bedroom townhouse, steak n scrimps weekly, and I still have money left for dj gear and nerd gadgets, etc. I'm good with money management though.. Plus I make a little extra doing dj gigs.

It depends on how you live. Even in Orange County in Socal, you CAN keep your living costs down if you rent a room. Yes, even in Socal, CA, you can get by renting a tiny room for $350-$400 in a safe place. When people are saying that you cannot get by on that in Socal, that applies to if you want a 1 bedroom to yourself. I even know of families that rent rooms. It's not glamorous, but you can get by.

You should be able to live comfortable on that salary in Texas. It is about the cheapest state to live in here in the U.S. My mom is a bi-lingual teacher, teaching for about 32 yrs now, and she now makes about 80K a yr! So if you stick with it you can live very comfortable in the future.
