How much is a 2013 worth with a shot engine?

I’ll try to make this as streamlined as possible. Youngest boy is headed to college, wife is having health issues. I basically ruined youngest boy’s 2013 Tacoma TRD off road. About 140k on the odometer. It needs a new engine and for that much money, the wife and I decided to get him a new truck that will get him through college and longer. The 2013 has a Accutune Off-road stage 3a Fox lift. Here’s my question: How much is a 2013 worth with a shot engine? Am I better off leaving the lift on it or swapping out the new truck’s suspension with the AO lift? How do I ever financially recover from this, haha?

If it is in that good of shape and the frame is solid I will try to go to your local auto parts recycler and price another motor it’ll be cheaper than a brand new truck

I feel like a new motor makes the most sense financially. He can get another couple hundred thousand miles + out of that thing.

EDIT: And you have to spill the details on how the motor got ruined. Fess up dad!

Have you priced a “new” truck or do you mean another truck? Second the replacement of shot motor.

A hell of a lot cheaper. Especially that interest rates have been raised.

At today's prices I would rather swap the engine than pay for a new truck. It would be cheaper that way and still get many mor miles out of it.

Alright, what good is the internet if I can’t let everybody call me a dumbass. A little backstory, we bought my oldest a new car when he went to college. He wanted an accord and he got enough in academic scholarships, that I could justify a. The cost and b. I liked the idea of a new reliable vehicle as he would be quite far from home. Fast forward to this year and new car prices were insane. The youngest got quite a few academic scholarships as well, but I explained how crazy the market was and he was more than happy to use my commuter, the Tacoma. Maybe I spoil the kids, but I told him I’d put a lift on it.
Last year the wife gets diagnosed with Hodgkins so between Dr appts, work and taking care of mom, the boys and my schedule filled up pretty quick. So when the Tacoma started running rough. I needed to get it fixed quick. First tried sea foam (maybe bad gas) that didn’t work. Next was spark plugs as I had never changed them. On the fifth plug, I sheared the bolt on the valve cover. Fvcking awesome. But I can’t leave well enough alone, it’s kind of my M. O., so I decide to drill out the bolt. Yup, shattered the drill bit. Look down the hole and see a piece of drill bit. Stick magnet down there and get a piece out. Don’t see anymore debris. Inexplicably, I take the plug back out, and when I do I see more debris on the lip. Get that out with a magnet and go inside to get a scotch and decide how I can fuck this situation up even more. It gets turned over while I’m inside. (I had put everything back and didn’t disconnect the battery) Sent it off to a mechanic. He determined that it was Fubar but maybe somebody who specializes in Toyotas could dig deeper. 2nd opinion at Toyota guy is you should get a new motor.
Wife and I will be headed to Houston for a while for treatment at MD Anderson, the youngest will be fending for himself, moving to college. The money sucks, but I’ve put a deposit on a new Tacoma for him because at some point stress management becomes more important than a car payment.

Kind of a perfect storm of things going bad. Most important thing is your wife and everything else will fall in place. Sunny days ahead!

You could still get the engine replaced and then sell that one. Recoup some money on the new truck?

Others smarter than I will chime in but it doesn't seem unreasonable I guess. I still vote for just replacing the engine and keeping that truck. You're saving $40k right there.

100%. And swap the suspension over to whichever one you are keeping. You'll barely get any more with the lift than if you just had stock suspension.

If the rest of the truck is in good shap. I'd go with the new engine. Any way you look at it, a replacement engine woul probably be only 6 months (max) of a new truck payment. Give or take what you would end up buying.
Then after the swap is done. No truck payment to hang over your head.

I would swap engines regardless of keep or sell the truck, being that prices for purchasing these trucks are high right now. You'll have people fight to get it and 140K ain't nothing for the rest of the truck either.
