It was 161.9 per litre in vancouver this morning. ($6.13 per gallon). I filled up in Point Robert's for 102.8 per liter ($3.89 per gallon), haven't calculated exchange yet.

The complaints are ever-present because gas has been turned into a political wedge issue (bottom feeders getting everything for free!) instead of an isolated part of people’s transit budgets. Gas taxes were used for a recall campaign for a state senator here in SoCal a few years back now, and many hopefuls tried to use it to rally Republican turnout for the 2018 midterms. It worked in the first case but not the second.

That massive screen grab HB Taco pastes above does contain some information that is at least partially correct, but it is also drawn directly from something called “Fueling California”—I tried to vet the source and read the study mentioned there, because I read a lot, but the study doesn’t seem to exist?! It mentions researchers but not their research. In fact, their webpage is the thinnest I’ve encountered in a while. Dead links and cryptic funding mechanisms associated with energy corporations. Check it out and draw your own conclusions.

Gas IS expensive here, but some of that is due to the special blends designed to deal with the tragedy of the commons; we have some of the smoggiest places in the country due to our population and approach to mass transit and geography and more. I don’t want dirtier air.

It was just shy of $4 a gallon for me at Costco the other day. My heart goes out to the lower income earners that have to drive a lot for a living and have to pay for gas no matter what, but they are driving older vehicles, not third gen Tacos.

Hey say what you want but were getting screwed on Gas and many other things here in the golden state. What we shouldn't complain so they can raise the taxes more? When you see what the other parts of the country are paying its obvious. I agree with you on wanting to have clean air and the AQMD has helped for sure but the "special blend" fuel shouldn't add $1+/gallon more. Hey I drive local so it's not affecting me much at all but it's the principle of it that irks me. Sounds like your justifying the gas prices here? Oh and your 3rd gen taco must get great mi. LOL

I can't entirely get behind this quote. Some people (or most people obviously) prefer heavy populated areas. Some people prefer a ranch in nowhere Montana. Various types of weather come into play as well. I think external factors shouldn't be the main cause of unhappiness, but I do think environment has the ability to make you happier.

I didn't say you shouldn't complain, but I personally don't necessarily feel "screwed" either. I don't really know what the true costs of cleaner fuel blends should be, though I would be interested in reading stuff written by people that have done detailed, objective analyses; the price fluctuations we see regionally, nationally, and globally often don't marry to supply/demand events, so it's extremely black-boxish from my point of view. Do you know of something we could share that would shed some light on this issue?

I think the administrative costs are the thing I'm the most displeased about when I see the breakdowns of the CA taxes on a gallon of gas, because I'm sure there is some bureaucratic streamlining that can be done. I would definitely pay more than $4 a gallon, especially if it went toward better air and mass transit and bike lanes and stuff like that so I could ride instead of commute on the hideous 405 fwy. I did consider fuel economy when I purchased my truck, so I bought the 2wd version with road tires because I knew that I wouldn't likely be going anywhere I couldn't get out of with a compressor, traction boards, snow chains, a shovel, and some forethought. My third gen gets acceptable mileage. You'll see me in MPG threads here. I get ~24mpg. My spouse drives a Prius plug-in that has averaged ~95 mpg over its 40,000 miles. In the two years since we purchased our two vehicles, our "garage" has an average of ~45 MPG or so. We're doing the best we can without altering our lifestyles.

I agree with this. I have lived in many different places but spent the ladder section of my life in the Portland Oregon area. I love the scenery and the outdoor activities in Oregon, but the external factor of rain and bad weather constantly really wore on me. I'm moving to San Diego this winter after spending large amounts of time there, and I couldn't be happier with my decision (especially with all the off-roading that you can do in the area!)

And for the sake of this thread, here in Corvallis Oregon I am paying around 3.07 for regular at chevron. That will change quickly, a few weeks ago in San Diego I was paying close to 3.90 at Costco.

Your environment “feels” like it makes you happier because it can be organized to trigger you less and avoid those internal issues that cause unhappiness.

That would suggest doing things you enjoy have nothing to do with happiness. Really getting into the definition of happiness here.

2.23 here in Winston Salem, NC. I worked in South Carolina for a while, but back then it was 70$ to fill up my Ram during the infamous gas price surge.

I just filled up this afternoon at my local Harris Teeter fuel center. This price reflects the fuel points that I get for grocery shopping at Harris Teeter.
