So, I bought my taco in 2016. After reading this forum I decided to check my U-joints among other things to see if they had any grease. I had an auto mechanics class in 1969 so I could afford to maintain my car, so I don't really have a good reference. But, when I first greased the joints they took seven pumps a piece ,so I think the dealerships may have blisters on their tongue. Anyway so I've run out of my 30000 mile warranty and it's time for me to change my oil, etcetera. My how trucks have changed since 1969. Lest I digress, my question is basically this: how much grease would the U-joints U joints use in 7000 miles? Today they all took 5 pumps, and two took seven from my manual grease gun. I'm asking this because I asked them to be certain to grease it each time I took it in given my experience when I first checked, and they last said they greased them 7000 mi ago. I probably should add here that when new the Taco first went to one dealership, and showed it was completely serviced there. Then, before it went on their lot, my dealership moved it to theirs and show they also completely serviced it before I picked it up. Unless these u joints go through what I guess is A LOT of grease, there seems to be a pattern here, and now I'm worried about what else they didn't do. Anyway can anyone tell me approximately how much they use?

It depends. Grease will thin out with heat and possibly flow out, also depending on the type used.

In the end, it doesn't matter much if there is no play in the joints. Just grease it with the recommended grease until all four seals purge.

Chassis lubing (I still remember hitting the body mounts with grease as a kid) is something that I would not count on the shop doing, since thankfully, we have only the U joints to worry about these days.

I typically squirt 4-8 pumps in my u-joints every 5k to 8k miles. The rears "use" just a bit more than the front.

I like your term "Blisters on their tongue"!

Man, what a coincidence seeing this thread today. I just had to replace the center u-joint on my 2015 Tacoma earlier today because it was breaking already. I'm only at 55,000 miles so thankfully it was covered under warranty, but that is still way too early. The only explanation they had was that maybe it hadn't been lubed properly during a previous oil change. I guess I'll either stick with the dealership for future oil changes or just do it myself.

Hey TW, thanks for the info. Sounds like all is well. I appreciate it. Got to keep this truck going for a long time as they've quit with the 4cyl standard 4x4s as we all know.
