How much miles do you get on a tank of gas ?

I guess to big city people that might be a issue living in the boonies in virgin country I fuel up at between 1/4 and 1/2 tank

That lesson was learned long ago(1974) not to trust a fuel gauge when it is 50 below trying to make West Yellowstone Montana

 

I am currently updating my fuel ledger book after the recent 1900 mile journey to Colorado and back
... started this ledger in May '95 with my first Toyota pickup and kept on with it when I traded in for the 97 Taco... I am nearing the end and running out of pages!

been getting some interesting results in the MPG differences I got from normal highway travel in my state vs Colorado and back to same o same o in Kansas back 2 NE/IA

IDK how i get nearly 3 MPG per tank difference
either a difference in altitude and/or the big oil is supplying different fuel outside of Colorado

 

My truck is 4 banger 5 speed, man transmission, manual hubs. Its poke driving around in a 2wd when my hubs are unlocked.

I also got 32 mpg with my 91 5.0 gt mustang after I swapped my auto for a 5psd and bumped the timing a lot. After my gear swap I got no better than 26.

 

1996 4 cylinder 5 lug with 33 on the small 7.5 rear end I got 200-250 mpg. I always had my foot buried in the floor trying to speed.

Just swapped 8.4 rear end with 4.10 n driving it is like a whole different truck. Haven't drove a full tank to see if mpg got better.

I don't look at the fuel gauge, I look at the miles traveled, and depending on terrain, I know about how many miles I should get out of a tank. For the longest time, my old 4Runner's fuel gauge didn't work at all, but I knew when I hit X miles I needed to start looking for gas, because I knew how many miles I could travel on a tank.

 

Guys, how hard can it be to calculate miles per gallon or miles per kilometer. Miles per tank is useless information. Not all fuel tanks are the same size, my Honda has a 12 gal tank, my Tacoma a 21 gallon tank and my Ford holds 36 gallons. And nobody fills up at the same point. Some guys will still have 5 gallons in the tank, others 1/2 gallon.

And on top of that fuel mileage can vary drastically depending on driving conditions. It isn't unusual to see a difference of 5-6 mpg from one tank to the next, that can mean more than 100 miles/tank.

 

It is actually a very good way of measuring, seeing as this is in the 1st gen forum, the 4x4's all have 18 gal tanks and the 2wd's have 15 gallon tanks. This tends to even out the range of the trucks and it shows mpg on an even playing ground for the 4x4 vs 2wd. This is a better way to compare the 2wd mpg vs the 4wd mpg for real life because we do not measure how many mpg we get, we measure how far we can go before the next gas station.

 

I don't think anyone is saying that as long as car X gets this many miles per tank, that means car Y should get that, too.

The math is pretty easy, but so is knowing that you generally get about 250 miles per tank based on your own experiences and driving habits, so you start looking for gas stations at around 200. Or like in my case, I know I'm limited to 150 or less if I'm in 4lo a lot, so I'm probably not going to plan a 130 trail trip without bringing extra gas. I really don't care what my MPGs are.

But MPGs and MPTs are literally the same thing, mathematically speaking, so it's funny to see people arguing that it's a useless number.

 

When my brother had his '59 bug it had no fuel gauge. Just a dipstick for the fuel tank. So knowing the tank size you have and how many miles you can make on said tank is very important info. Just cause it doesn't apply to anyone else doesn't mean it's worthless information. So if you average 300 miles per tank and fill up 15 gallons on average then you know what? You probably are getting 20mpg on average. Given your odo is accurate. I usually use the mile markers on a particular stretch of highway but you can use GPS too.

 

The nice thing about tracking how many miles per tank you get, is that it doesn't matter if your ODO is accurate. The 4RUnner I mentioned earlier certainly wasn't recalibrated with my 32" m/t's. It was like 12% off. But that didn't matter, I just drove until it indicated 200 miles (or whatever it was).

BUT I have a 15.5 gallon gas tank

Nope, and had to walk to a gas station only once for gas since I don’t have one.

i like to see it go off downhill or around curves when the fuel level shifts in the tank
then it comes back on, so far I can go at least 40 miles when it starts to flicker for the first time

 

My 2-wheel drive prerunner's tank holds 18.5 gallons.

 

Interesting; are you actually filling your tank up with 16-18 gallons?

I too have an '01 Prerunner and the most I ever got was 15 gallons one time during my year of ownership.

Must be a double cab thing to get an 18 gallon tank if that's true...
