How much oil does the 2.7 hold?

I just checked mine the other day after driving it around for a few days and it looks like even with 5.5 qts it seems to be right at the very top of the top dot on the stick. I think I'll go with 5 qts the next time around and see how it looks after a few days of driving.

Well, this is the first time I have changed the oil in my Tacoma. I have had the oil changed at the dealership up until now. I looked back at my receipts and they all show 5 quarts were put in on each oil change. So I am assuming driving around on 5 quarts is fine seeing as I have done it for 26K miles.

 

Under filling a little is better than over filling. I have been using 5qts. Check the oil the next morning after it sits. Easier to see it on the dip stick.

When I worked as a lube jockey my shop charged extra over 5 qts, as do most other shops. We didn't pour the oil out of jugs, instead we had a hose with a meter on it connected to a huge vat. If it was anything less than about 6.5 qts most of us would just call it 5 on the paper work to avoid the extra charge. Some shops will have factory specs in the computer that automaticly charge for what the factory says should go in there but as you can tell the factory spec isn't always right. Be carefull if the desk jockey tells you that your vehicle will cost extra because it takes more than 5 qts according to his computer. Ask to see how much is actually pumped in before you pay any extra.

 

Well according to the owners manual that came with my '07 the 2.7 engine oil capacity with a filter change should be (5.8 Liters, 6.1 Quarts or 5.1 Imp. Quarts) I understand Liters and Quarts, but what is an Imp Quart????? Anyway 6.1 seems to be the recommended fill with a filter change so figuring there is probably close to 1/2 quart left in the engine that doesn't drain out 5.5 quarts should put it close to or a tad over full and 5 quarts should put it just a hair over a 1/2 quart low either of which should be fine no????

 

I rotate my tires every time I change my oil and let it drain while I am doing the tires, cleaning the rear brakes. etc.

I put 6 qts. in mine and after running for a bit it is right on the full mark. The first couple of times I double checked after the truck sat overnight and it was right on the full mark the next morning.

For my 2007, the owner's manual calls for 6 US quarts.

I use Mobil-1.

 

i just did mine in mine in my 2.7 and it took a jug and then some.... almost 6 quarts with new oil filter

 

Changed mine (oil and filter) last Friday. Put in 5.5 quarts and it was above the full level according to the difficult to read dipstick. Drained a little (about .18) and now just right. On the other hand, on the oil change before this one, I put in about 5.4 quarts and had to add about .1 (total of 5.5) to make it to the full mark. Go figure. In any event, I hope my dipstick reading is accurate.

 

I don't know about the others, but I always run the engine for a minute or two, then let it set for about a minute before checking the level.

the whole dipstick is a design flaw. so hard to read. cuz the oil goes way up the stick then has a little plateau where it should be. especially hard to read when you put in new oil. i used mobil 1 0w-20 and my mpg went up a few. i put in about 5.7quarts

 

Someone said the 4 cyl's are supposed to take 5w-20, but my oil cap says 5w-30, could been something they had to switch when I got the truck brought over to canada from states, I find between 5.5-6 quarts is where im ending up, I put oil in, start engine up for a minute, wait a couple of mintues, then check oil level again, I'll check it once more in the morning, and its usually bout bang on!

 

Yeah I been running mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 for a year and 35,000 miles with no problems. Don't know whether to bother to try 5w-20.
