Three things can affect the volume of oil.

    1. Rate of oil burning. All engines burn oil (otherwise the piston rings are not properly lubricated).

    2. Rate of oil contamination/scavenging. All engines have some blow-by, which includes raw gasoline and combustion products (water, carbon dioxide, CO, etc.). This is exhausted by the PCV system, but the oil must be at high temperatures to vaporize the contaminants to be scavenged by the PCV system.

    3. Leakage.
