I paid an outside mechanic to look at mine. He found the diffs (F & R) to be low as well as the transmission after I had been to two dealerships and told the level was normal. Also the zerks were bone dry. The rear fenders rattle like a band of monkeys banging on snare drums (see link) and the lower control arms howl on the slightest of breezy days (told this was normal by dealers twice). The drive line is still clunking when I roll to a stop (told this is normal). The Speedo "ticks" at freeway speeds on rare and random occasions but dealer can't recreate the issue as it's too enigmatic to catch.

I don't think so. I could get 25mpg on the freeway and 19 around town before I put the topper and tires on. No way those two things would account for such a drastic decrease in mpg, and it's only very recently when the transmission stuff started happening again the mpg took a nosedive.

I know what you're saying, but honestly, the way Toyota has handled all of this, no fix is going to make me love it. I despise the company now and the damage is done. I'd rather just cut my losses and be done with Toyota.

Hey Smitty... is the "drive-line" clunk you speak of possibly the driveshaft sleeve in need of grease..?? I'd bet that my be it...You know ... the spline that moves back and forth as you brake or accelerate..?

And that's my point. Why should any of us have to go to the length of paying an outside mechanic to check something that the dealership won't due on a BRAND NEW truck? I just went into this thinking Toyota stood behind their products. But really, if this is how they handle stuff like this, easy fix or not, it's not a company I want to do business with for the next 10+ years I originally planned to own the vehicle.

@Sbpark have you tried test driving a different Tacoma at the dealership?

If the different one that you drive feels better, I would take a 3k trade in hit if the new one feels perfect.

I can guarantee you that the dealer will want you to trade it in for another one that you may like.

Another option to do is complain at the dealer about the MPG and claim that the truck does not meets the EPA estimated MPGs. Make them drive it for 20 miles. If the trip MPG average is well below the posted MPG numbers, you can ask for a new vehicle. If they don't give you one, you're free to file a lawsuit complaining that the MPGs are not the same as those posted. Ergo false advertisement lawsuit.

Sorry man... It is really a nice truck when all fluids are up to par and the ECU reset..!

It resembles a hard downshift and it almost surges the truck forward when it does it. Ubolts are to spec. Anyway don't want to hijack the man's thread with my truck issues.

    Nice suggestions but...

My truck drove flawlessly from the get go, so there's no guarantee if I get another one and take a hit financially on it.

And as far as the MPG, all the dealer has to say is I put a camper shell and different tires not he truck and attribute that to the decrease in MPG, even though my MPG only dropped a few MPG when I added those things. The recent drop further I really can't explain, but since the truck has the shell and tires on it, they won't do anything about it is my guess.

Shit, reset the ECU? I can't even get a fucking dealership to check the fluid level (one said they did but I have no way of knowing if they really did). Are there areas on the bolt for the fill port on the transmission? They said they added a small amount of fluid that leaked out when they checked. If I know where the bolt is and it's marked I can check. Ivy truck is 4x4 and know the bolt for the 4x4 and 2WD trucks are located in different locations.

Which is why they'll keep pulling this shit. Until someone documents everything meticulously and proves there are defects, they will just continue.

in my opinion and speaking bunch of Lexus Tech at the dealership this is adaptive transmission will take a while to adjust to your driving habits, have mine almost 860 miles on 2016 TRD off Road pkg getting better, as per them this is the newest tranny the are only using in 2016 Tacoma just saying. if you are not happy, try to sell it on your own. Good luck

Nah we have owners here with over 7k and 8k miles complaining of issues. Some seem to get worse over time.

Can't stand the sound of a Subaru engine, that "wop wop wop" of the boxer engine. That sound would drive me crazy..... must be something wrong for it to sound that way.

I have over 6,000 miles on my truck. It was awesome from the beginning and progressively has become worse, clunkier shifts, has slipped into neutral twice while driving (i have an auto) when accelerating, takes a few seconds to go into gear form a cold start at times and will hand out in neutral even after I've shifted into D, and my MPG has become much worse, not better.

I get it that everyone wants me to check the transmission fluid myself. Thats not going to happen for a few reasons. my driveway is at a 30 degree angle. Not happening. Also, if i check it and add fluid, there is no record or recourse that it was low. I want it done by a dealership so there is a paper trail. Third, for a $30,000+ truck, no way in hell and I fooling out money for an indecent shop to do what Toyota needs to step up and do. Based in principle I'm not doing it.

So all you can do at this point is bitch and moan! People have given some very useful advise. Shit or get off the pot man! Take it to an Indy and pay for the trans check. There is your first paper trail. It either needs fluid or it doesn't. If it did then go back to the dealer and request them to pay for the service. If they dont then file a complaint with corporate and go to small claims court.( if you go to small claims have the previous service records stating that the dealer checked the fluid and said it was ok).

If it does take fluid then get the EXU flached to wipe out all the bad habits

He doesn't want your advice on fixing it. He wants your advice on trade value.

Blah, blah. Thanks for vomiting all the info others have recommended, and most of it I've don't or tried to have done. You can "request" all you want at the dealerships, doesn't mean it's as easy as that. Many have refused.
