Sales tax is capped at $300 in South Carolina. (Red State)

BTW I have used Truecar.com they use ZAG and local and not so local dealers will present their best prices you can buy at (which is reflected in a guaranteed discount to invoice plus those pesky "doc fees" which is nothing but additional profit.

$750 below invoice seems to be the best deal..before doc fees

OP, please post what you paid when the time comes. Anyone else on the west coast please feel free to let us know as well.

I'm in Seattle and plan to drive down I-5 looking for the best deal from Seattle to San Diego. I'm going for my sister's wedding and I want to drive a new Tacoma home.

The best deal right now on ZAG/USAA is $29,891 for a 4WD DC V6 OR w/JBL, tow, running lights and mats. I'm coming down late in June so some incentives would be sweet. I would love to pay about $29,000 before tax.

That's certainly quite a roadtrip, covering plenty of dealers. In your case, you could play some fun games, because the bargaining power you have as a traveling buyer is phenomenal. Negotiate and make it clear that unless they make the deal as sweet as it will come, you'll find a better deal and take it elsewhere.

My sport DCLB w/ tow/drl/fogs/jbl/bt/etc was ~$29850 before taxes/licenses. I think I've provided the itemized numbers on this forum somewhere...

Those are reasonable and believable prices. I see some prices people claim they paid and have to wonder what the rest of the buyer's order looked like, Some places allow Horrendous "doc fees" which have to be added to the purchase price, then there are lowballed trades l o n g term loans and someone thinks they bought a $30K vehicle for $27K...
Lots of numbers get mangled in the dealership. Best find a good offer others have made that looks reasonable according to Edmunds/Truecar/ and put it on the table. Dealers aren't going broke anytime soon.

I was working with a trade in so if it was a outright buy I could've squeezed the dealer harder..Truck was purchased March 23, 2011

Wilson Motor's in Bellingham was far cheaper then most local dealers in the Seattle/Lynnwood/Bellevue area in WA. Deal with Stephanie Akers. Let her know I referred you if you get a good price.

I purchased a used 2010 Tacoma DC SB 4x4 with JBL with escort 9500IX Radar for 26k total from craigslist. I was unhappy with the dark magnetic color and spent a week hussling a trade-in deal.

Wilson agreed to 26,800 trade in sight unseen and gave me a price of $29,900 for a 11 Tacoma DC SB TRD Sport/JBL, Mats and sills, Tow package, Daytime lights, Skid plate, and exhaust tip.
I kept the radar and sold it for $400.

Took all of a hour to complete and I couldn't be happier.
All local dealers were about a $1000-1400 difference for the same truck with no skid/exhaust tip..Sales tax was also a 1% difference in Bellingham.

    FYI for Seattle area buyers

people keep chiming in with prices for their PRERUNNERS or 4cyl how does that help?... that is just giving the OP a false sense of pricing, obviously a prerunner is cheaper.

32k sounds like a good price out the door to me.

You're exactly correct. Some think they paid below dealer cost... there's a very VERY tiny chance they could have (I've gone into the circumstances where this can occur in other posts, but it is EXTREMELY rare), but almost certainly didn't (for a number of reasons I won't go into here).

Another item, they may have had a trade in, so there's really two transactions. Dealers don't care where they make their money off of you, the front or back end of the deal, or even in the financing. They could've made most their profit off of the trade in, and given them the new car at cost, making you think you just scored. You didn't (not to say you maybe didn't get a good deal, just not the scorching deal you thought).

If you want help with this, let me know. I can walk you through getting the best deal, and not having to even step onto a dealership lot until you're deal is done.

With the caveat... not sure how the current inventory/allotments/port inventory is right now. I've seen posts on here saying it's very low, so it might be a bad time to buy... not sure until we start checking online inventory and talking to the fleet managers about their port inventory (won't show up online).

This is the offer I got:

    Dealer Invoice (cost) $30,315.00
Selling Price $500 over dealer cost =$30,815
Tax & dmv will to $3,400.

You guys think I can get it lower?

Too high. I paid 29,800 before fees for the same truck and that included about $400 in extras : floor mats, chrome exhaust tip, and bed mat.

Definitely check this site out. I went through this site after dealing with dealers directly and it paid off. 3 dealers called me the very next day after sending my info on this website, and my Out the Door price is $32,871. The dealer is currently ordering one which will get here in 3 weeks because there are none in southern california currently.

I got mine before trade and tax for 28k w/step rails, alarm and tint, but that was with the college grad program. So I say shoot for 29k before tax. Actually shoot for lower and get them to come down to that.

if so then YES you probably can. I used truecar.com 2 days ago and they had a dealer call me and give me an OTD quote of $32,871.

I don't know if this will help any, but I just bought a 2010 Tacoma 4X4 double cab, V6, SR5, TRD off road, bed cover and mat with 10,000 miles for $26,000. I do believe if you look around there are great deals on slightly used ones.....

Get a copy of their invoice. It should have all the costs of everything broken down. Then look in the Dealer column (not Retail!).
Start with Base model, add total accessories, Dest. Charge, TDA, Gasoline, Dealer Holdback and Whsl. Financial Reserve. That give you their 'invoice' price but in reality, that is not their 'cost'. Destination Charge is non-negotiable no matter where you're looking. I've heard mixed responses with TDA, so it may or may not be negotiable, but holdback and reserve are both negotiable.

The $500 above invoice game is just that... a game. You should be paying under invoice. Play hardball with them - after all, it's quite fun :D

What was the original "asking" price for that..Im betting around $29K LOL Many don't believe you can save $5000 on a year old model.
