so what exactly is your question?
do you need mommy to reassure you if you can go to the bathroom too?
one time you say you got offered 27k and thinking about it, then you say you talked the dealer to give you 28k for it, then you ask if you could squeeze a little more to be closer to 28k for it, then you say you only paid 29k for it ok, so sell it and run, no one in their right mind would pay 28k for your truck when they can get a new one so close to the price with 0 miles.

regarding your prices on lots, seriously if you think asking prices are the actual transaction price then you need to come back to earth, all those listed trucks even if certified don't sell for that much, that's why it's an asking price not a transaction price.

You need to run, not walk there and take that offer.
So a dealer is offering you to give you $28,000 in cash for that truck? Sorry, I don't know if I believe that.
I'd do that once a year, and then add $1K for a new one. That's the deal of all times. Never repairs, the one year, $1,000 lease with unlimited miles ...
Is that dealer maybe offering you $28K, but you'll have to buy a new truck from him for $38,000 in the same transaction?

my neighbor had a regular cab 1st gen truck. he told me they offered him ridiculous trade in money for it. ($14k?, cant remember). i told him to jump on it, as he really needed a new 4door because of a new grandbaby. when he showed up at the dealership..the real offer was $7k. i think he was just given a puffed up number just to get him to show back up.

neighbor ended up with a honda ridgeline, that he accepted because the honda dealer gave him $10k trade-in.

until you get it in writing, it is all potentially bullshit.

you will get a few miles per gallon better with 2.7 tacoma. Not as speedy as a 6cly but gets the job done.

Wow, I knew it wouldn't take someone long to get offended. First off, the question was how much should I sell it for, hence the title of the thread. Second off, I never said the dealer offered me $28K. I said their offer was $27K but that I thought that maybe I could get them to come up to $28K since they were so quick to want the truck for $27K and they have other used trucks listed for $31K. And lastly, if i paid $29K for my truck when the sticker was over $32K, then that should tell you I have a pretty good idea of what asking price versus actual transaction price are.

Anything else in my questions that you'd like to take personal or get offended by eurosport?

Theres always a guy like you.

Sounds like the OP already has his mind made up. The dealer is going to give him $27K for his truck...I say BS, If you paid $29K for you truck in November 10, do you really think the dealer can afford to give you $27K 8 months later? He wouldn't be in business long. Quite a few sensible folks have given you realistic quotes, but you disagree, so move on. I don't see the point of asking a question if you've already figured out the answer to your own question. Thanks for joining TW and leaving so soon.

Ok, so you know asking vs. actual. Then what are you saying?
    (a) the dealer gives you $27K and then sells it for $25K?
    (b) a one year old model with 20K miles on it is worth more than a brand new truck?
    (c) the dealer is retarded?
    (d) the dealer thinks he can find somebody who pays $32K for your truck? (that's what he'd probably have to think to make it worth the risk he takes here).
    (e) I think (c) and (d) are actually the same.

Now as I said, I'd run and get $27K for that truck.

    lol...

OP let me act out how your actual trip to the dealer will go to save you time and frustration.

You: Hi, I spoke to you and you said you'd give me $27K for my truck I bought in November. It's got 20K miles and you agreed to buy it from me for $27K.

Dealer: Who did you speak to? John? Mike? Jim?

You: I don't know, it was on the phone?

Dealer: Let me get our used car sales manager

Sales manager: I can give you $27K, but you have to pay my asking price for the car you want. It's only fair to ask top dollar for my car if you're going to ask top dollar for your car.

You: Shit, I thought you we're going to buy it outright for $27K.

Dealer: I'll give you $15K for it. I can get the same truck at an auction for $13K.

You: subsequently post on TW, "Don't buy a car from dealer X" because they lied to you Thread.

I am still not clear -- is the dealer flat out offering to buy your truck for $27,000, and you walk away with money in the bank?

Or are they offering you $27,000 in trade when you buy another vehicle?

steviestyles, youre right, lots of people have given many different opinions on the value of the truck, to which I appreciate. That was the whole point of the thread, what to find out what a reasonable sale price would be and what people thought of this $27k offer. And maybe you are right, maybe if I went back in there today they would not give me $27K? Yesterday the salesman got an appraisal form out took his sales manager over to the truck and came back and said they would give me $27K for it. You may be correct about selling a truck for $29K and then another dealer purchasing back for $27K. I bought it at Gresham Toyota and its Bend Toyota who offered to buy it. The must think they can make some money on it somehow.

sechsgang, im not sure what you mean about $25K? I never said anything about $25k. I also never said that someone would pay more for a used truck than a new truck. I simply said they had used tacoma's at a high price, which I provided a link for. And if you look at the dealership link I provided you will see they are asking over $31K for a stock 2008 tacoma. So you are probably correct about option (c). I dont own the dealership, so what they buy and sell used trucks for is their program.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

JKD, it was an offer to buy my truck flat out. Walk away to the bank. The conversation started with a salesman approaching me on the lot asking if I needed help. I told him my truck was in for service and he asked what kind it was. Told him and he said "those are nice trucks". I said ya "you want it". He then asked if I was serious about selling and said they love the used tacomas and "cant keep them on the lot".

He asked if I wanted to do an appraisal, I said sure. He filled out the form took it to his manager, they both walked at to the truck and then came back with $27K. I had a hard time leaving the dealership without them trying to get me to leave the truck.

    Thats the story.

I went to kbb and that price seemed ridiculously high, so I wanted some further opinions from you guys.

    +1.
I still think this is bait & switch though to get him to spend like $3K over MSRP on a new truck.
Raley, go back there and do it! If I'd have been in your shoes, I would have not taken those keys back, LOL.

Three words..Certified Pre Owned. The dealers are going to turn around and slap the CPO sticker on that truck and sell it with a better warranty than it came from the factory with (plus remainder of factory). That drives the price up over the sale price of new tacomas in some cases. Not sure what the financing specials are in OR, but in CO it was 2.9 for used CPO and 4.9 for new.

Also with the recent issues in Japan, dealers are getting less new vehicles period. The Tacoma was obviously not affected as much as say the Prius, but yes that has driven new and used prices up a little. $27K cash is good, probably could do a little better, but if you traded it you also get credit on the tax amount of the trade.

Unless there is no sales tax, like for example in OR, where the OP is from. ;)

I was unaware of that. We pay sales tax in CO (4.1% - 8.5%) + Owners tax with registration.
