Selling my 2001 Tacoma Xtracab Prerunner.
It’s 2wd with no diff lock.
Truck has 128,000 miles on it.
I bought it from the original owner who bought it at Van nuys Toyota in 2001.
    Clean title and no accidents.
    Registration paid.
Truck is from CA so has no frame rust whatsoever.
I’ve maintained it well and kept it stock.
I’d say I’ve put about $1000 worth of parts and labour into it.

I currently have it listed for $9,000 but I’m not getting as much interest as I thought I would.
CarGurus said the resale value is $9000

    Here’s the CL ad

It's only worth what someone is willing and able to pay for it. Just because KBB or cargurus tells you it's worth $XX, doesn't mean you'll get that much for it. Typically, the price KBB gives you is a little under valued, but that is only because in some markets people are willing to pay more for one because of demand.

You have 2 options, either lower your price or expand your market and hope to find someone who is willing and able to pay that much.

Based on 2wd with no locker I'd say $6000 might be more reasonable. That's more what I would be willing to pay anyhow, provided it's up on maintenance.

In my experience, folks willing to pay top dollar for these old trucks are the off road crowd. Most are looking for 4WD and ideally rear locker.

    GLWS, good looking truck.

Should be able to get $9k for it here in SoCal but might not happen overnight. I you really want to sell it fast take $7k for it and I bet it will go quick.

9k is a good price for LA and i'm surprised it hasn't sold yet.

when i was shopping for a tacoma a few months ago anything with that low miles or less than $10k was gone in three days-- granted this was for a double cab.

you have a clean carfax on those miles for sure? i looked at 4 trucks and 3 out of the 4 had rolled back mileage.

Yes clean car fax. I ran a carfax on it before I bought the truck from the original owner.

I remember when I was looking at buying a 1st gen Tacoma it took forever to find one for less than $8,000 and when you did find them they would sell the same day.

Craigslist is BAD for that. I never put any personal info in the add. They can respond via the craigslist email that gets routed to me, and I've never had a problem selling anything, so honestly I'm not really missing anything if you don't respond to my ad.

I see people do the "seven oh nine 4 three o type stuff as if they think that prevents the same computer algorithm from using a "seven" in their code instead of a "7"... They don't even get my number until it's clear they are essentially on their way to get whatever widget I'm selling.

I still get several scammers or lowballers that contact me thru the craigslist email.

So many times I've seen posts of people selling their 1st gens and getting a new one, then they end up missing it.

Well, I know that if I were interested, but only able to pay 8k (or even 7k), I'd still give you a ring, and try to negotiate. These trucks are (generally) in enough demand that people will call no matter what the price. If you aren't getting many calls, that suggests to me you need to cast a wider net.

You got more than 50 posts, so throw this up on the for sale section, Bet you'll get some bites there, too.

I don't agree with the old adage as an item's broad market dictates what it's worth, not what one person is willing to pay for that particular item.

For example, suppose this seller drastically needed $5000 by tomorrow so he sold his Tacoma for that amount. Would it mean that now all like Tacomas are miraculously only worth $5000, of course not.
People pay both more and less than items "are worth" everyday.

OP, you have a very nice truck with A LOT of trouble-free miles remaining........it's fairly priced. Unless, you are pressed to sell quickly I would hold out to get your current price.

I get enough crap phone calls from telemarketing bots with solar panel and credit card offers that I don't need anyone else knowing my number.

Fun fact. I have two people coming by tonight to pick up some stuff I had on CL. No phone numbers. Pretty easy.

i would list the things you have done for maintenance -- like timing belt service. I see the timing cover has been off and there are some new looking plug wires.

Talk about it in the ad.

or give more time. Maybe a bad week for selling anything. Many are just back in school or paying off a vacation.

I don't think anyone claimed the broad market of what something is "worth" is affected by what a single person is willing to pay for it, as in your example.

The way I see it, there is a huge difference between what something is "worth", which is based, more or less, on statistics, and that particular item's value, which has a more direct effect on you.

The "value" of something is HIGHLY regional, and even situational. If you are in a hurry to sell, it's value is lower because you are self limiting the market.

But the idea of what you think it is "worth" has no bearing on what you will actually get for it.

Yeah that's kind of part of the "expanding your market" thing. Likely the more places you post it the less time you'll need to wait. more people = less time.
