I did my 1st oil change. Opened filter and let it drain completely, new filter up and tightened. Opened drain plug and let it drain completely, plug it back. Now for refill, I poured in the whole 5 quarts of oil, let it sit a bit and check dipstick - about 2/3 between the marks. Poured in roughly 1/3 quart, and it sat at 3/4 between the marks. Poured in rest of quart (6 quarts total now) and it sits about 1/2" above the top mark. Started engine to let oil flow into the filter, hoping it'd lower the level, nope. Still about 1/2" above top mark.

Leave it or drain it a little? Been driving it and seems fine but afraid of aeration of oil by crankshaft..

    2019 V6 DCSB OR.

    Thanks.

Should have left it between the marks. If it were mine, I'd drain the excess off.

If you put 6 quarts your fine the dipstick is hard to read on these trucks cuz it’s so long

Yeah mine has tow pkg, but I guess we can't drain it completely, must be quite a bit of oil still stuck between the oil passages? Putting back 6 quarts leaves it 1/2" above top mark.

    Drain some.
    The manual says 5.5 quarts.

Also for proper air flow you should remove the drain plug, and remove the filter and fill cap. It may not empty all the way without good air flow.

yes I remove the fill cap and dipstick while draining. However only either filter or drain plug was open at a time during drain process.

It's gonna take way more than 1/2 inch above the full mark to cause any problems; absolutely no need to drain any off unless it's just going to drive you crazy til it's exactly on the full mark.

I did the same thing as you OP. I drained a little off until it sat just below the top mark

If it hasn't been suggested, take your dip stick and drill holes in it at the low middle and full line. This will help you to see where the level is at.

Little tiny holes about the size of the dimples at most. You don’t want the tip breaking off inside the engine. Also, use a drill press and proper vise.

Correct, this is the way they used to be made except they were stamped holes. Oil would fill the hole like when you use to blow bubbles as a kid.

I always drain it while warm...then dump 6qts in and go. Hasn't failed me yet at 83k miles!

    Drill holes in a dipstick?

Put six quarts in, and call it a day.

Try this. Wipe the dipstick and shove it back in. Wait about one hour. Pull the dipstick out and Do Not Wipe It. Should now be easy to read. If you put 6 quarts back in, I bet the level will be close to the top dot on the dipstick.

Might as well point out that this is inaccurate.

If you truly drained everything 6qts is fine.

I always just dump the full 6 and 0 issues. Mine has never been above the full mark with 6 quarts.
