Some people add oil coolers, and other mods that requires more oil, not that this person did but if they still want to be accurate with oil and can't tell by looking at the dip stick this is an easy mod that can help. I have even added hash marks to dip sticks in the past with a cut off wheel being careful not to go to deep. It definitely helps my kids when they change their own oil.

You never get 100% of the old oil out. If you let it sit and drain for an hour or so you might come close, but most of us leave the drain plug out for 5-10 minutes at most.

My 2nd gen takes 5.5 quarts, I don't know about the others. I always add the 5 quart jug and drive it a short distance to fill up the oil filter before checking the oil. If the oil level is a little below the full mark I don't worry about it. If close to the "add oil" line I'll add 1/2 qt or so. It is almost always between the lines and close to full with just 5 quarts.

I wouldn't make a habit of overfilling. But if you're no more than 1/2 quart over I wouldn't go to the trouble to drain it either.

Somewhere things I do is after the initial rush of oil comes out I put a coat hanger bent strait with a hook to hold it in place so I can leave it dripping for a few with out worrying about wind and a mess.20241206_152644.jpg 20241206_152620.jpg

Here are the hash marks I put on the dip stick but they don't help as much as the holes I suggested.20241206_164136.jpg

Newbie poster didn't check the date of the last post.

Still a pertinent topic though. My 2nd Gen holds 5-1/2 quarts to the top of the full mark on the dipstick. That's a PITA because oil comes either in one quart or 5 quart containers. I order my 5 quart containers 3 at a time from Amazon, and then go to the local parts place and buy a quart, which is good for 2 oil changes. There's as much as half a quart or slightly more residual oil in the engine after draining. The camshaft wells, crankshaft galleries, oil filter, oil pump and VVT solenoids and cam chain tensioner won't drain fully. Once my draining oil changes from a stream to a slow drip, it's time to screw in the plug and refill. I've done enough changes that I know I can pour in 5 quarts (after priming my filter to soak the element) and then half the one quart bottle, and it will be at the top of the dipstick marking. I don't overfill but I also don't run 1/2 quart low, as I tow a lot and that half quart can be important for carrying heat away. I wish the oil pan would hold six, or even seven quarts. I'd still do 5K oil changes with a new filter each time. One way to increase oil capacity is to install a larger oil cooler or an auxiliary one. My old GM diesel held eight quarts and I was wishing for ten.

Understandably the thread is 2019 but when people google oil capacity in a tacoma it comes up. Just adding some extra info to help 3rd geners out.
