I was under the impression that the taco couldn't physically fit a full legitimate full yard of dirt for some reason. ill say ive never been charged for a full yard at the yard. not that that takes away from the arguments that's its still over the weight limit of the truck, because it is.

I've hauled a load of topsoil to the water line in my AC a few times. Biggest problem you have is "is it wet/damp or dry" . That will dictate what you haul. Wet top soil weighs a LOT more than you think. For the short distance you're driving it shouldn't be an issue. Be careful and safe. I also suggest putting a tarp (cheap or expensive) on the bed at least half way and be sure it covers the tailgate. The worst part is getting the crap from the gap!

I also have one of these. I have it attached to the tailgate of my trailer (bought it before got my taco). My eight year old unloaded 800lbs of brush all by himself

I'd go 1/2 a yard, look at the springs and decide from there. I've hauled a 1/2 yard of stone and that had my on the bump stops. As others said, dirt weight depends on moisture and that's going to vary by the day and location, so be safe. Remember, it's not just your springs but also axle seals and bearings and related things that can get f*&ked up.

Moisture content is one big weight factor. How much clay is in the topsoil is another.

I regularly load a yard of triple mix, mulch, compost and firewood in my truck. These are all a lot less dense than "topsoil".

I prefer a half yard if it's limestone screenings.

Go half a yard and make 2 trips. Truck isn't going to handle well with a yard in the bed. Especially with stock springs.

"Topsoil's weight can vary greatly due to moisture content. In the dryness of the summer, the weight of a cubic yard of soil can drop down to around 1700 pounds, while in the spring when soil is damper, one cubic yard may weigh well over one ton"

Well, shoveled in about 3/4 of a box full of top soil. Truck was still 2" off the stops. Truck handled it like a champ. Even went through Highway road block and they didn't bat an eye. Not something i'm gonna do often

Oh and everyone saying don't be cheap and w/e. My issues is this. I need 2 yards. There's 2 guys where i live that sell top soil. They sell it by the 12 yard load only. No exceptions. The other option was i buy a bunch of over priced pre packaged shit.

Got it for free from in-laws, just had to shovel it.

Had 900 lbs of shells in my short bed , 1.5 yards. No problem. Spilling over edges on ride home. Weight wise easy, still finding shells everywhere in bed, ugh. Trailer next time.

When I had my second gen I hauled plenty with it from topsoil, mulch to stone. Just tell the dude running the front loader that you will tell him how much to drop while watching the way the truck is handling the load. As others mentioned how wet whatever your carrying will effect how much you'll be able to haul as well. If the guy running the loader is experienced he will both be used to getting this request and know how to drop a little bit at a time gently. I too used to cover the bottom of the bed and bed sides with a tarp to help with clean up. To those saying not to do it, it's a pick up truck, part of the reason why we buy a pick up truck is so we can haul crap with it and not have to pay delivery fees etc. In the past I have gone to the yard and had them load mulch in the bed and topsoil in the trailer. Yeah the truck got a workout but for the couple weekends a year where I needed to make a mulch or topsoil run I knew if I was smart about it and took it easy that the truck would be fine.

Hauled close to 3,000 pounds of retaining wall bricks yesterday. Wouldn't do that again but it did okay (handling sucked coming out of the mountains) and just kept it geared down and didn't go over 50 mph. I didn't realize how heavy it was until I got home.
