I am looking to buy a A.R.E CX shell with a roof rack installed on it. I whitewater kayak and with boats and gear I will be pushing 200lbs on the rack. My A.R.E. dealer said the shell is rated to 250lbs and has a life time warranty on the structure. Has anyone had any trouble with too much weight on the shell?

*I know the Yakima system is only rated for 165lbs. I'm more worried about the shell then bending my bars.

I know I'm answering a question you didn't ask, but it may offer you some reassurance.

I wored as a mechanic and parts installer at a bicycle shop for about 8 years through highschool and college. all roof rack systems (thule, Yakima, etc), used to be rated for 300-350 lbs. there was a lawsuit stating that vehicles were rolling over on turns because of the weight on the roof racks. the roof racks could support the weight just rine, but drivers were not taking increased COGs into account when turning. all of the manufacturers were required to lower their rated capacities. so while the sticker on your rack states 165 lbs, the design of the rack is no different than a the racks manufactured before the lawsuit.

Thanks for that Info, I've definitely loaded more weight then the 165lbs on mine, and it was fine. I'm more worried about the shell because they are so expensive. I don't want to damage it because of weight on top.

can't help with the sheel strength, however, I know some years ago, Yakima and thule both made "load bars", which were essentially intermediate supports that attached in the center of the cross bar, and added a third "foot" to each cross bar, thus lessening the pressure applied to the shell. not sure if they still make them, but it may be something to look into.

I'd be under the assumption that overloading the bars and damaging the shell would (for warranty purposes) constitute abuse.

    Just a thought.

If I had the cash I'd go PrinSu over any other brand of rack, if I was going to be getting some weight up there without a commercial shell (with reinforced roof).
