Haven't really read much of the manual yet but I would assume it would say change the oil at 3k miles for severe use and 5k miles for normal stuff or do I have that backwards or some of the wording wrong :)

and what do you guys change yours at?

My father always changed oil in our toyotas every 3.5k so naturally that's what I do with mine.

I use straight synthetic and change it every 10,000 miles but I don't drive it hard.

the oil is not very dirty when I change it

if I had dino oil I would change it every 5,000 miles

synthetic lasts twice as long as regular oil so if your just switching over just double what you used to normally go.

    Wow.

Syn and ever 3k-4k. And it's dirty as heck. But it takes me about 6 months to drive 3k.
I also use 5w30 mobile from Walmart (cheapest place to buy it).
But I use a Mopar 452 filter due its larger capacity.

cheap Dino oil, and change it once a year. Have to add 1/2 quart every 1.5-2 months so it should stay pretty fresh.

I usually change mine with full synthetic every 4.5-5K. It really depends on your driving/RPM more than the actual milage. '11 4.0 6spd

5K like others, after 100k or so I plan to run 10k mile intervals and change the filter at 5k.

Every 5000 miles or twice a year. Now that the truck is semi retired from daily duty I only put 6500 miles on it last year. 5-30 Synthetic of course.

Anytime I get a vehicle under warranty, I follow the schedule that protects the warranty.

Which for me is exceedingly rare. Like 4 times in 55 vehicles.

On vehicles I use dino in, I just follow the heavy duty cycle, typically 5k. (BTW, modern SN oils are very good, almost syn quality in many ways)

On vehicles I use syn in, I do my initial change from the PO oil in the first couple weeks. Mobil 1 of the correct weight. I then change at 5k and send a sample to Blackstone labs and let them tell me what it looks like.

Typically they report back to sample again at 10k the next time. Which I do. Again, they'll often suggest I still have 'headroom' of another 3-4k. Which is nice if life gets in the way and I need it, but normally 10k becomes the standard.

Now, since some vehicles I don't drive 10k a year, I'll send in an annual sample. Usually I learn things are just fine. Up to 3 years of fine.

Working with a tribologist I know, who has his own lab resources, we've pretty much determined that miles are the major factor, not time.

    Long story short..............

If out of warranty, it doesn't matter much what the book says or what anyone else tells you they do. What matters is what your vehicle requires, based on the lubricant you choose to use, how you use the vehicle, and the results of independent lab tests.

Everything else is pretty much guessing and voodoo.

BTW, you can't really tell anything about the condition of the oil and it's additive packages based on it's color at change time. Dark oil can have tons of life left. Only your lab tech knows for sure

And for those of you who think I'm totally nuts, do some reading over on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ While there is a lot of antidotal junk on there (from forum members) there is also a lot of hard evidence supported by long term testing............
