i am trying to deny it, but i can't. I am 35 and coming on 36. Well, I was told once by a wiser, "older" man that once you get to 50, you are considered a recycle teenager

I am from Calgary Alberta Canada, home of the cold winter one day and a chinook sunny day the next. My job is not as exicting as flying helos, but I am Telecom Sales Rep. Exciting, eh?

Dont let "Top Gun" fool you... military aviation is hard work. Fun, but from a much different aspect.

I worked in the automotive trade for 30yrs, blew out good old L5 disc and that ended that, currently I am dealing with back pain and working part time in a national chain sporting goods store(Dick's Sporting Goods).

well i am on the ole soap box again, :)

To Jeff: the back problems are one of those things that we have to deal with when we spend our lifetime working in the automotive trade. If i had to do it all over again, i would still perfer to work on cars, and trucks without any hesitation. after i "retired" (couldnt deal with computers taking over cars) i worked several box stores, building electronic displays and resets. After doing this for several years, i realized i wasnt comfortable with it and went back into the automotive trade once again. Only this time, i went into the detailing area and love every minute of it. After all, where else can you be in a porche 911, bently, corvette, or a mini cooper s everyday and drive one too, lol!

To cwagly: yes, its true that once over 50, some of us do become teenagers again. Others though, and there are a few, never do, and behave like an ole horse sent out to pasture, retire to some place like florida and hang out with other "ole people" playing cards and shuffle board everyday. They need rogaine, viagra, geritol, and lets not forget that purple pill, lol! Well, screw that, a good woman, and a Toyota truck does the trick for me! I am told i am 60 going on 61 in April, but I am really 19 with 49 years worth of experience  I work with people whose average age is 25 and earned the nickname "old school" I have their respect and i reciprocate same.

The younger crowd keeps us ole guys young and I thank you for that. I still learn alot about trucks from them, and they learn alot about older trucks from me, so it works out pretty good.
Listen to what we have to say, and we will surely listen to what you have to say too.

Time for me to get off the ole soap box once again, my girlfriend is cookin up one helluva breakfast half dressed as usual, :D

This is a damn good forum, you all have a good one

Sunruner19, yea, I wish I was still working in that trade, have been thinking about trying out some dealers parts dept, as my back gets better but don't want to end up delivering hoods and things like that.
So we shall see I guess I could try for a parts job in my local taco dealer. I really would like to be able to work 35hrs a week in the future. I am sure I could learn alot at a parts room.

I would definitely go that route, working in the part dept. You will find that working there, or any place that you actually enjoy, you will forget the back pain. The weather affects it immensely also, as i can predict a storm with my back better than toplar 2000 or whatever the weatherman use, lol.
However, i must caution you, as far as working in a toyota parts dept, its like working for a toy store..........toys for your truck, that is:D but that will take your mind off your back too! I ran into that problem when i was a parts manager for chevy. I was able to order parts that were not available in the u.s. for my chevy truck, which lead to alot of $$$$$$$ spent. I owned a tracker back then and changed the name of it to sunruner, which was what the tracker was called in canada and sold thru g.m.c. dealers.
A little trivia here, in the far east, Thailand i believe, the tacoma is called a Tiger 2000

    Jeff,
With you automotive background maybe what you need is a job like mine. I'm a Catalog Manager for an Automotive A/C company. It's the ultimate partsman job. I do OE research for all makes, maintain a data base of my research, I develope new products for our product line such a compressors, receiver driers, evaporators, condensers, etc, and I maintain the company's on-line electronic catalog. I originally started life as an auto mechanic in the USAF from 68-80, then went into parts at a local Nissan dealership for 10 years and for the last 17 years I've been working in the a/c side of the auto industry.

sunruner19, I was just cruising thru the Northeast section of Tacoma Nation and the enlarged picture of your truck, boy does it look sweet.....you really have done a great job customizing it. I see you have bounced around the south shore of Mass. I have a number of friends down in the Hummarock/Marshfield area.
Hopefully, we will have some sort of Taco gathering this summer somewhere.

Quite familar with that area, jeff. I lived not far from there and traveled down rt 139 and 3a quite often.
I would definitely show up if there is a get together this year. I presently live about 6 hrs from there, but love traveling back to mass. Keep in touch and let me know if this get together does happen.

^- i like the previous rides part and especially the "don't miss at all" remark and the "miss her dearly". :) made me think of all the vehicles i've had and the one i was so stupid for buying. quick recap looks like this:

    Now
    07 Double Cab PreRunner
    04 Volvo XC70

    Then
02 Jeep Wrangler (traded it in for the Taco)
06 Honda Element (was a lot of fun while it lasted)
04 Acura CL 3.2 Type-S (damn that car could fly)
02 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ :)puke: what an overpriced P.O.S.)
98 Acura CL 3.0 (never should have sold it)
    88 Acura Integra
85 VW GTI (1st ride and those were the days)

Yeah.....I miss the GTI....that car was so much fun to drive....leather, sunroof, 7 CD (1 in the dash, 6 in the trunk), turbo...I miss her so much, but my wife couldn't drive (never learned 5 speed), and with a two year old, another baby due anytime, and a dog, there was absolutely NO ROOM to take the family, and since I have a company work truck, it was hardly ever driven. The CR-V couldn't hardly pass a gas station....the dealership tried to tell me that 15mpg for a four cylinder was good mileage. My GTI could get up to 32mpg in mixed city/90mph highway driving! The CR-V felt like you were driving a toaster...no class, no style, nothing special, seats were uncomfortable. Now, the Cavalier......in 3 years/28,000 miles, that POS had the oil pan gasket replaced, AC compressor replaced, front seat plastic trim replaced on both seats, 4 struts replaced, door panel replaced, two window seals replaced, radio replaced, and after I traded it in, the timing chain broke(I knew about this because I worked for the dealer where I traded it in at). Sure all of those repairs were warranty repairs and didn't cost me anything, but if that much can go wrong within the 3 year part of the warranty, what did I have to look forward to AFTER the warranty ran out? I didn't want to take the chance and find out.
