In New Mexico you could get a "scooter license" (under 5 HP) at 13. Back then all the Japanese manufactures had models under 100cc.
At 14 1/2 you could get a learners permit if you were enrolled in Driver Ed & you get your license at 15 if you passed the course. :burnrubber:

Agreed. If you were raised around vehicles and learned to drive young, you will likely be a more proficient driver than someone who wasn't allowed to mess with the cars/trucks/etc when they were underage. When you spend your early years dicking around with vehicles, you have already learned the ins and outs of them. Whereas if you're 16 and have never been behind the wheel before, not only do you not know what you are doing, but you will likely be more inclined to do crazy/reckless stuff. Ie: "Wow, I'm finally driving! Let's see what this bad boy can do!" The overconfidence many of us have in our teenage years can be very damning.

You beat me to it, I did this exactly, 14.5 learners permit, 15 license with drivers ed. I had been driving on the ranch since 5 years old, my grandpa would put the tractor in low, low,(two trannies on most tractors, four speed tranny and three speed, low, direct, high, kinda like a transfer case), he would walk the mile home and beat me by 10 minutes. Then about seven I figured out how to change the gears, and I wasn't allowed to pass him walking. Then it was decided I could drive the flatbed hay hauler when picking up hay bales, and been driving ever since. My 12 year daughter has been driving at the ranch since about age nine, and she can drive a stick shift truck, car, or tractor.

Same for California (in 1978)... 15.5 for the permit. No restrictions other than a licensed adult had to be with you.
    16 for unrestricted license.

Today, the permit is the same (except the licensed driver with you needs to be 25 or older), but the license issued still has some restrictions... You can get your license as early as 16, but for the first year (or until you are 18) you have to have a licensed driver over 25 to drive between 11pm and 5am, or to have a passenger under 20.

Under 18, you can't be employed to drive... no pizza or flower delivery.

It used to be 14 for a Restricted license, but the law changed just prior to my birthday in January. So I had to wait another year, but I was first in line on my 15th birthday. Happy birthday to me! Back on my 16th birthday for the Operator's license.

That was a long, long time ago.....

In Arkansas.. Got my permit aka "learners license" the day I turned 14 and my intermediate license at 16. With intermediate I had to be accompanied by 21+ for the first 6 months and after that I was all good. At 18 I got my regular license.

So is the poll question asking when we officially got our regular driving license or just any driving license?

Regular license is what I was thinking.

In retrospect, I should have polled for the delta in legal eligibility vs. actual age the DL was obtained.

When I was younger my buds & I couldn't wait to get our license. Today's teens seem to not be as excited or in as much of a hurry. But the legal age varies so much based on location it's kind of hard to tell what I was looking for using the existing poll...which by the way I still find interesting.

Started driving tractor and farm truck at 12. At 15 I got my Mom's 65 Mustang impounded along with 4 tickets. Mom put me in drivers ed class so I could get my learners permit and then got my license on my 16th birhtday so she could add me to insurance in case I crashed something lol

In idaho it's the same story as most other places apparently. Permit at 15 DL at 15.5. And that's what I did. However I firmly believe it should be older, and kids should have more required supervised driving time. Like permit at 16 and license at 17.

And I know some of you guys say oh it depends on the kid, how they were raised, blah blah blah. But you can't make exceptions for some better taught kids and let them get their license and others not. At 16 i dont think you aremature enough to have a license and drive a car on your own. Sorry, high shool Kids have their moments (plenty of them). Seen plenty of stupid and done a couple stupid things myself. I just knew I would be effed if I actually caused an accident. So i played it safe.
