My hero Chris4x4 is the greatest "how to" mechanic blogger, and this site has the best instructional write-ups of any vehicle-specific blog out there. That's why I've never been compelled to post a write-up for my Tacoma. Here I'm a student, not a teacher.
Such is not the case on other blogs. My wife and I bought a BMW a few months ago and, since then, I've been perusing the Bimmer blogs seeking info about general maintenance and mods etc. But guess what. Apparently BMW owners don't work on their own cars. In fact, when I had the gall and audacity to even inquire about DIY oil changes, my questions were met with scorn and belittling sarcasm -- I felt like the nerd who just walked into the Cobra Kai Dojo. These people post about best color, window tint, leather conditioner.... It's really quite pathetic.
Anyway, I figured I'd make heads explode and try to do my best impersonation of Chris4x4 by introducing the Bimmer bloggers to DIY threads. Here it is -- video style.
Still loving my Taco and the TW community.

Bimmer Blog; "My GAWD, Muffy, there is someone asking how to *ugh* do your OWN work on his car! Have you EVER heard of something SO common? I'm feeling faint! Please ring the butler and have him bring me a Perrier out by the pool! I REALLY need to sit down for a while!"
(Said in a snooty, slightly nasal accent, of course...)

All in fun, of course.

    You nailed it!!!!
The clear majority of BMW forum members adhere to BMW's free maintenance schedule, which is an oil change and tire rotation at 10,000 miles. The mere utterance of someone doing a mid-interval DIY change is met with swift criticism. It's very mocking and sarcastic type criticism too. Very odd.
My theory is that the every 10,000 schedule was borne out of BMW's accounting division and not engineering. Back before BMW started its "free" 10,000 mile maintenance interval schedule, they advised customers to pay for the first change at 1,200 miles.
I'm quickly learning just how douchey most BMW owners are. It's too bad too because it's a very great car -- handling and power is amazing. But, the owners remind me of the rich neighbor kid who nobody liked who'd try to join water fights while saying his parents said he couldn't get wet. Fat smirking kids with lollipops.

I'm only on three or four forums, but this is the only forum I actually post on. TW is great, lots of info, but a lot of misinformation also, sometimes you can't tell which is which.
I have a 05 Subaru Legacy GT, and that forum is excellent for do it yourself projects, great step by step instructions with pics and videos, I've used that site for countless things, but I only post to thank people for all the hard work to put an instructional diy out there for all of us.
I'm on a couple diesel forums also, but too much "stacks and rolling coal" types to wade through.
The last forum I visit is for tractor owners, I don't post at all, just read others experiences.

So true! I've even been guilty of thinking one thing, posting it, then realizing I was mistaken. I don't think it's ever malicious misinformation, just some people are so convinced they are right!

The widest spread misinformation on here (in my opinion) is that Taco lean is a suspension issue. I installed a driver side lean spacer on top of my 5100s set at 1.75" and my truck sat more or less level. Once I replaced my body mount bushings that changed. I now have reverse Taco lean in a major way. I'm about to replace many of my front suspension components and will be keeping both sides even.

Exactly, once something is believed, it's so hard to convince yourself you were wrong.

I did read about the body mount bushing fixing the taco lean, I just keep all my tools and crap on the passenger side of the bed. Doesn't really work, but I'm not quite ready to do the body mount bushings, have done them on another truck, and it wasn't fun!

Miata.net is a fantastic site for Miata fans. Spent many years there. Love their 'garage' feature where DYI writeups and articles are preserved after being vetted for accuracy. Much easier to find pertinent data than searching threads.

TwinTurbo.net is a great site for Z32 fans. Spent several years there too.

In slight defense of BMW owners, they are not all prissy. I've met a few in the SCCA world that were great wrenches and drivers.

And if the full truth were revealed, you could find a percentage of Tacoma owners who have BMW attitudes but only a Toyota budget. Reading some of the last year's threads makes that pretty easy to see.

The Outback and Fit sites (main one for each) are very good as well, but again nothing like this one in terms of info on DIY maintenance and mods.

The Jeep forums are pretty awesome like the Tacoma ones. The only other one that I have been to is the Rav4 one, which seems to be a mix.
