I poked around YouTube and listened to some engine noises posted. I've got nothing like those, no knocks, whistles, etc., must be normal noise I'm hearing.

I agree with tastyhuman, I have had similar complaints (particularly those related to nutty cost cutting measures and cheap interior and exterior materials), but believe the drive train is probably very good/reliable.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I read about one somewhere with 629k on the original engine, think it was a first gen. With regular maintenance, these trucks are easily 300-400k mile trucks.

2nd gens are notorious for things like the engine tick. Normal, but sounds weird

Even though my tacoma is only a 2010, I find myself constantly telling people about how reliable it is. Obviously not so much in longevity, but in how much abuse (mostly offroad here) it can take with NOTHING breaking or going wrong (knock on wood).

I've been so heavy on the skinny pedal while going up inclines over big rocks and other obstacles that the truck is red-lining, tires are burning, truck is bouncing up and down, etc that I am sure something is going to break, but nothing ever does. Then after these episodes, I put it back in 2wd and hop on the highway and it rides like a Cadillac like nothing happened.

I used to baby it, but after progressively being harder and harder on it and realizing how strong these trucks are, I'm pretty much not afraid to go anywhere nor am I afraid to try to defeat any obstacle.

Check out my build page for pics and vids. I believe some of the most recent vids (on the last page or so - especially the one that is about 14 mins long with the title like "open diffs") show my truck taking some tough abuse during it's conquest to defeat obstacles. - enjoy!

edit: I'll just add that one vid here and maybe some more that show some real abuse.

I expect that my truck will be used to squash roaches after the next thermonuclear war.
It will probably have achieved self-awareness by then and not need a driver.

Thanks for the feedback folks, I greatly appreciate it.

Got to listening closely at the "noise" recently observed. Seems just to be normal for the truck (keep in mind I'm new to Toyota and all brands have their quirks). I'm looking forward to having this thing ("Spruce" -- thanks for those on the other thread) for a very very long time.
