Hey everyone. So I bought a 2012 recently as was in a bind for vehicle and didnt notice the black rubber undercoating was covering up rust until now. Theres surface rust on wields, bubbling on frame, and spots where paint flakes off with rust.

I have health issues and need a reliable ride to the hospital but I think I got a rotten deal and have to think of selling it. 140,000 miles and was $13,000. I'm in New England and its hard to find anything clean. I was wondering what you Tacoma enthusiasts thoughts were, here are some images.

That is fairly minor rust for New England. Price is about right considering what these trucks go for. Don’t sweat it and plan on fluid film in the fall or sooner.

That’s not bad at all. Rust on the welds is not rusting through. Strength will be there for years to come. Drive it!

Agreed. That's pretty clean for a 10 year old truck in the salt belt.

That's not bad at all. That truck will probably give you many years of faithful and reliable service.

That said, take the truck to your local Toyota dealership and have them inspect the frame. This will qualify you for a 12 year (from the first in-service date) frame warranty. Trust me, you want to do this to protect you from future rust. Oh, and it's free!

You're gonna be just fine there! I've seen 2yr old vehicles with that much rust, from various manufacturers. Enjoy that rare little gem :)

I'm not in the rust belt, so this is outta my wheelhouse. Is the sprayed on protectant wearing off or applied poorly? Seems like the parts you can't see unless you crawl under on your back, or parts that are harder to spray are not sprayed except for some overspray from doing the side of the frame rail.

Thanks guys sooo much words of encouragement. I'v had gen 1s and thats what I thought not bad, then I thought it was bad. Then after what this gentlemen above posted, it doesnt matter, thats an ace in the sleeve. Is this really true? How freaking cool.

I called dealership, gave them VIN and they said it was eligible for frame recall. Well that is they inspect it, if it fails they replace if it, if it passes they rust proof inside of frame. But they did not tell me that from that date on I had twelve years and if it got bad I could have it replaced.

Well, definitely taking it to dealership. I'm hoping the guys in the shop will pressure wash this crap from the underside of the vehicle give em a good look, I still expect it to pass.

Based on what I see in the pictures, your frame will pass the inspection. If it does, they will still want to do the latest "inside the box section clean, dry, de-scale and coat" process to extend the life of those critical areas. As others have said, Fluid Film, Wool Wax or a number of other products will extend the life of the outside of the frame. Trust me, that truck will last a long, long time.

When I opened this thread to read it I was expecting to see some nasty rust pics, I’m happy for OP that was not the case. Nice truck.

I think the rust is minimal from what l can see in the pictures.

I too was expecting a rusted through frame when l read the caption. But happily disappointed!

    She looks pretty good

Thanks guys. Is this true Toyota warranties your frame 12 years from inspection? If thats true that makes me incredibly happy.
