i have a 2005 Tacoma Prerunner that is in excellent condition and been very well taken care of.

About 20,000 mikes ago I started getting driveline vibrations at 15-25 mph and the dreaded squeal every time I backup the truck. From the research I've done, it sounds like I simply need a U joint replaced and that should fix both the reverse squeal when I hit the brakes, and the vibrations under acceleration I experience.

I am tempted to call a local shop and get it replaced, but my question is, if I don't, will I be ok?

I can live with the driveline vibrations and the backup squeal, but I don't want to do long term damage to the truck or have some other part fail because of this.

Recommendations on if I should have it replaced, and how much it should cost and how many hours labor for a shop to perform.

    Thanks

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
If it's bad, replace it. You will eventually damage the yoke or possibly lose the shaft while driving if you continue to drive with a faulty u-joint.

    yep..
Get it replaced. If you want to minimize expenses. Bring the parts to a shop and have them press in new u joints. I've always used Moog and had good results with their joints.

If it fails and the front of the shaft digs into the ground, it will screw up your truck.

Just replace all of them on the rear. Assuming 3 joints, you'll be out maybe $60 if you do it yourself. Plenty of DIYs out there and it is easy work. Get a ball joint press for free from Autozone to help out on the install.
