I just purchased this 1st Gen Tacoma. 4wd 127,000 miles @ $9k about 2 weeks ago. Bought it from a big dealership I thought and appeared to be reputable a state over.
I took it to my local Toyota dealership to get sensor replace and they discovered this stuff. They said the frame was in decent shape but everything else had rusted so bad that if I needed to replace anything under it, (shocks, brakes, etc.) that a lot of parts would have to be replaced just to get to what I wanted to replace. My dealership advised me to call them back and see about sending it back or see what they’ll do to make it right. Guy said a lot of the bigger dealerships will walk the integrity line even though I signed the “as is” documents.what should I do? If they don’t let me send it back I was gonna ask them to fix the undercarriage

I dont see how that frame looks "ok" Im honestly not sure if this is a #FailFriday thread...how was that not spotted? That brake is so far gone that they shouldn't have been allowed to sell it. Like, how does that pass an inspection?

I would borescope the inside of the frame, if they tried to hide rust on the outside, it'll be pretty clear on the inside.

Take a couple pictures of the rear shock mounts and the frame above the rear wheels.

That rust doesnt look pretty, but from the pictures seems like it hasn't gone too deep into anything other than the brake shields. Take a hammer and tap along everywhere you can on the frame, that should help reveal any hidden structural rust. Might be able to clean it up and undercoat? It may just be the picture, but it looks like the transfer case is leaking too. I would talk to the dealer, but definitely recommend inspecting something pretty thoroughly before signing "as is" papers. Congrats on the 1st gen, and good luck!

or perhaps was coated with that stuff they used

    what state was this in?

At the time of sale I asked had the vehicle been up north and the salesman told me it had not. I drove over from Mississippi to around the Pensacola fl area to buy this truck. I got there in the rain and it was dark. I drove the truck back and forth down their road over and over and it road good. Also, another wrinkle in this story... I attempted to replace the brake pads this past Saturday. One rotor was done for. The pins to get the pads off were so rusted, I had to hammer a pin punch to get them out. Couldn’t even get passenger side out. Luckily passenger side pad was good. The driver side was metal to metal

Edit: post above showed up after I typed this one.

I am not afraid of rust and one of my trucks was worse than that when I got it. But, I think you paid too much for it to be in that condition, unless you are in a high dollar state like California. If so, somebody may have taken it there to dump it for max value.

They are right about working on rusty vehicles. It sucks, and if you are paying others to do it, don't be surprised to pay a little more. Everything (especially bolts/studs) breaks when you try to do any removal. Check your fuel and brake lines along the left side of the frame and make sure they are not about to rot through.

I'd hit them with taking it back, then see if they offer to give partial restitution. Here in Indiana, my opinion that would be about a $5000-6000 dollar truck. If they start negotiating, try to get about 50% refund to help them "save their reputation".

Not surprising. In that second pic you posted your dust shield is toast. Definitely needs to be replaced.

The back half of your truck actually looks better than the front half. I also noticed that it looks like your e-brake cable is sagging.. Does the parking brake work?

There’s a cable around the control inside of the truck. Smh

Post up what shitty dealer this is as a warning to others.

Always. ALWAYS, crawl under the used vehicle youre buying. A simple quick look with a flashlight in the rain would have told you to run away. I have a 2000 for sale that doesnt have any rust if youre interested. lol

As stated above, this truck will be a nightmare to work on as almost everything will break while removing. Probably double the labor cost of regular work like brakes, lift kits, shocks, and more.

I don't want to be rude but you should of seen this during the test drive / inspection. Using your phone flashlight would of shown front brake back plates almost gone. That would of raised flags you needed to crawl under that truck.

I would be very surprised the dealership does anything for you and as also stated above, the value is almost half what you paid for it.

If the dealership does ignore you, I would sell the truck and take the loss. Find another cleaner truck. Messing with that damage will only cost more and more and aggravate (piss you off) every step of the way....for years.

Again, sorry to be so "matter of fact".

    Best luck

Yeah, honestly it doesn't look as bad as the dealership you took it to made it sound. Working on rusty shit sucks, but unless you live in the desert or southern parts (where most people on this forum are from) you're going to have to deal with rust.. Maybe take it through a good carwash with the undercarriage jets and then let it dry. Some of that actually looks like salt residue (like the pic of the rear end) to be totally honest.

It either lived in a rust belt state for a while, or they drove it on the beaches. Best of luck, fighting that kind of rust is a bitzh! If it were mine, and you can't resolve with dealership, I would start by spraying the entire undercarriage with a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf, poor man's penetrating oil.

None taken. That’s my fault. I definitely dropped the ball on this one for sure.
