PA and OH. both very salt laden states. I would take this info back to the dealership and see if they will reimburse you in some capacity even if you do keep the truck.

Yes. mostly from the salt (and other chemicals) poured on the roads in the midwest. trucks that have been exposed to a lot of salty sea/ocean water also suffer these from these issues.

I'd press for a refund (even a partial refund) based on the lie that the truck hadn't come from a northern state. A the minimum they should replace the damaged parts on their dime. Yea, the issue could have been avoided if the OP had done a better job, but that doesn't excuse the dealership. They KNEW the truck was damaged. If the were a reputable business they would have repaired the rust damage before putting it on the lot for sale.

    Update:
Dealership offered $650 bucks to have my undercarriage cleaned and under coated.
Manager wasn’t budging but did offer that. Said that his team inspected the vehicle prior to sell. I then asked why would you put a vehicle on your lot with that type of rust and deem it okay to sell without correcting the rust issue? He paused for minute and agreed.

If the dealer was willing to sell s truck in this condition, I HIGHLY doubt they'd do anything but tell you to pound sand if you came crawling back to them.

They probably even have some legal protection against their "misinformed" sales person, since buried in the paperwork was a carfax or other report saying where it was from. Hell, wouldn't be surprised if you unwittingly signed a "we are not responsible for anything" type CYA clause.

The lesson here is that the temporary discomfort from a wet t-shirt/pants very well could save you thousands of dollars and many years of frustration.

But as others have said, it's likely not as bad as it first looks. Put some elbow grease into it, and a few bucks and you could end up with a pretty decent vehicle. Judging by how rusty everything is, and how (relatively) little rust is on the frame, this could have had its frame replaced at some point.

I'm honestly surprised they even gave you the time of day.

That said, don't have your frame under coated. All that does is cover up rust and hide problems. Hopefully they just cut you a check or something. Take that money and invest it in rust removal, parts, and fluid film.

i could not find anything on the carfax regarding frame replacement or anything of the sorts, unless it was hidden
the best option to find that info is probably enter VIN on the toyota.com owners page for more info :notsure:

    It's complicated.
If possible, get the $650 in cash. If they cut you a check, take it directly to their bank and cash it, right away.

Either way, don't let them do any work on it.

Carfax isn't this magic database that knows everything about your truck. It only knows what people (voluntarily) report to them. Granted a frame replace likely would have been done at the dealer, which would (should?) report that. Maybe the previous owner just did a better job of hiding the rust on the frame so it doesn't look so bad... I dunno...

Sorry to hear OP - but why didn't you look under the truck before buying/signing papers? Whenever I'm in the market for a vehicle, regardless of the age, I do a quick visual inspection myself.

i am thinking the insurance companies are pulling at government muni and states to overdo this at times with no regards to the destruction of roads and bridges, not to mention the vehicles

this is the 2nd time this season they have covered the streets locally for a puny little inch of snow and drizzle

Just want to reiterate- if you can, take it to a shop that you know is reputable and not the shop that the dealer drops their cars at.

When I bought my truck from the dealer it was leaking gas from the tank. They brought it back to their shop, who did fix the leak, but forgot to hook up my fuel gauge sender. So back I went to the same shop where they put everything back together, and mixed up my EVAP lines. I did the rest myself..

Your reply missed my suggestion. Why are you wondering? Its easy....to fix this truck along the way and what it will be in the end is not worth it as he is looking for a very clean truck. This truck will NEVER be that.

List it for sale with honest description and take what the fair market brings. Someone would love to have that truck for a hunting/off road vehicle that last whatever or for a body swap on a clean drive train as a project. It has value to the right person...but the OP does not seem to be that person. Yes he will lose prob $4k or whatever but that is a smaller hit than dealing with that rust.

Rust is very invasive and expensive to get rid of and rarely remediated 100% no matter how much money is spent.

    My opinion of course

If you plan to keep that truck don’t let them spray any rubberized undercoating on it. Only use fluid film on a frame.

On the plus side, it's the perfect opportunity to learn how to weld.

Removed Predator Running boards. Removed front air dam. Installed Weathertech window visors and hood protector. Added vinyl color to engine cowl.
I live up north where we lose traction on the road salt more than we do on the snow. My 1st Gen looked much worse than what you've got there. Your cat/converter doesn't even look ready to go. The previous owner probably ran her on the beach a lot and didn't bother to hose her off. There look to be some minor things to take care of (and as everybody else says, rusted metal is a pain to work with), but as was already said, follow your fuel+brake lines. Clean them with a wire brush. Check their condition and, for God's sake, wear safety goggles. You did pay too much, but you've got her now. People have made bigger mistakes. Just LEARN from this. Consider it a project. Once you've got her safe start cleaning and painting to stop further rust. Good luck. Keep posting pics as you go along.

If your gonna get a refund the dealership is probable gonna demand you sign non disclosure agreements so you may not wanna post their info. Also the papers will say you can't come after them for anything in the future so make sure everything else is kosher.

I dont want to kick you when your down, but as others have pointed out, a quick look under the truck would have shown the rust. I won't beat a dead horse.
Now it comes down to do you feel the dealer misrepresented the vehicle?. I wont cut & paste all your post, but I'm quessing you think they did. Only you can make that call.
I can tell you a quick story about my 2019 Ford F250 that was a problem child. This picture tells the whole story. Ford quickly agreed with me and bought my truck back at full purchase price. I bought a 2019 tacoma DCSB Off Road and never looked back (although I still DD my 2002 tacoma).
If you truly believe the dealer misrepresented the truck, let Buick & GMC know about it. While the dealer is independently owned, a lilltle pressure from the manufacturer goes a long way.
