Yeah same I do enjoy primitive camping more. It’s nice to be away from others and enjoy your privacy. I’m really liking your setup here, what RTT and bed rack did you go with?!

yeah true but when you’re out camping and it starts to rain there’s no real other way around it right? The only thing I can think of is pulling a whole camper but then you lose the ability to really go off the beaten path. I have a military trailer that I’m leaning more towards building out with a RTT and kitchen setup. I’m thinking if I want more out of it, I wouldn’t be losing too much on converting it into a teardrop myself

The best solution I found was buying a really small standup unit, but you'd have to modify a bit depending how far off the beaten path you want to go. :)

I like the Tab@400, a small bathroom. The skylight dome barely gives me room to stand and shower. No, I would not go off-road with it, but often it would be ideal to have a "base camp" location, drop the trailer, and come back at night to have a place for a quick rinse off and sleep!

I keep looking at RTT, but I was doing PT for my knee with a 30 something old guy, paraplegic. He missed a step, his leg slid through, and it snapped his spine when he fell. Amazingly still upbeat, but I stay off ladders.

My little trailer has been dragged across a field or two. It can't exactly go rock crawling up Hell's Revenge, but the high clearance/low roof has gotten it into spots most campers can't. Like my garage. :cookiemonster:

Rack and rtt for me. But there are times I wish I had a camper to simply get out of the wind. Those howling winds I'm sure most of us have experienced. They suck. Some areas I visit in the back country a camper wouldn't make it though. I always remind myself of the simplicity of what I have...even if I am connected to my "home" if I leave camp and go exploring.

    Oh look, another mod....

I had a Jayco just like this. I loved how light it was and easy to store places. It was almost 20yrs old when it finally started to fall apart.

Man I’m REALLY liking that Scout Yoho it looks kickass on your tacoma. As of right now I do mostly primitive camping off trails usually in OK or AK. Just me, 2 dogs, and gf for now

    Trailer.

Had a Wildernest on my old Tacoma…seems like every time I got it setup, wanted/needed to run somewhere. Trailer you can just drop it, keep it stocked up with supplies, plus won’t have to mess with taking it on and off if you daily the truck.

Number of ways to do it, military/utility trailer with a RRT, tear drop, small enclosed cargo…or old truck bed converted for camping.

Have done the camper attached to the truck for years and years, it is a pain in the neck. At least for what and where I like to camp. Like to get away from crowds, but close to trail heads, hot springs, lakes and rivers that are nice to run to from camp.

I’m leaning towards exactly what you’re saying. I have a military trailer in sight already and exploring the options of how to setup a rack on it. I’m trying to see if it will be cheaper taking it to a shop to have a rack custom made or finding one I can have bolted on. It may or may not need new suspension work done to it. It’s my gf’s dad’s

Sounds like a great starting point, plenty of threads on here and on Pinterest to get ideas.

All depends on what is cheaper, go get some quotes from the local welding shops, they might have some scrap, laying around they could build you something on the cheap. Or go buy a cheap welder and learn how to do it yourself.

I have a 5X8 utility trailer for hauling dirt bikes, that I am either going to build a rack with an RTT, or enclosed it…or just buy something new. Have gotten that 5X8 into some really tight spaces. Pretty much over having a camper attached to the truck…have been doing that for the last 30 years or so.

Beauty of a little camper is you can unhitch and roam without having to take-down and re-setup an on-the-bed-raised-rig.
Paid about $5,000 for this 5 years ago. Runaway Campers. They make several versions and are a bit more expensive. Perfect
for 1 person and works fine for 2 as well. They come empty so you trick it out the way you want it. Oh, and it weighs about 1,000
pounds and you can move the thing by hand if needed.

I’m more of a minimalist when it comes to camping and I never stay out for more than 3 nights at the most. I have Leer 100xl topper with a simple bed platform on a couple 2x6s and a cut tri fold mattress on top. Able to stuff a bunch of stuff underneath and then I put my cooler and Plano storage trunk packed with camping and cooking gear in the back seats. No roof racks or crazy tent setups like most, also my truck is a short bed and I’m 5’9 but if I lay diagonally I can lay down stretched out fully. I’ve had no issues and everything is able to be in the truck completely overnight and truck and topper are locked via key fob. I’m pretty minimalist and don’t require much so it works for me.
