Sorry but this may have already been asked here.

We have just had our underground parking lot broken into. They cut the chain link to all 3 man gates to access the inside handles. Nothing reported stolen yet. However there are reports in the neighborhood of catalytic converters being stolen.

Our 2020 TRD sport DC truck is 8 days old. How theft resistant is the 3rd gen Tacoma? Should I put an old school club on the steering wheel as well?.... Or any other theft deterrence's?

I'm not to familiar with all the theft deterrent systems on the truck. What have you experienced with the third gen?

    Thanks in advance.

Learn to disable your smart key so they cannot steal the signal. Press and hold lock and press unlock. The fob will flash and the door will not unlock when you grab the handle.
Buy a SaBellCo tailgate lock as those are a "hot" item for thieves.
    That's what I do/did so far....

Third gen’s have a theft deterrent built into the body style/ motor and transmission

Thanks for the advice. We are physically far away from our truck so the key fob is not communicating with the vehicle unlike living in a house with a garage and a truck parked in front of it. Our Truck is parked in a common underground parking lot. I heard reports that thieves rely on cars parked in front of residential garages where folks leave their keys hung up inside their houses so they are physically close to the garage and are emitting a signal. Thieves somehow intercept the signal to spoof the key fob to unlock the car. Is this what you were referring to? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/car-thefts-rising-1.4930890 Or do you mean the signal from the truck itself?

I didn't know that the Tacoma tailgates were a hot item. I have mine locked with a newly installed Tonneau cover, wouldn't that be secure enough?

However, I should look at gettinng that tailgate hinge lock you mention regardless as it's a cheap insurance policy.

If they're after cats then a truck is a prime target being higher up off the ground. You don't really hear about Camrys getting their catalytic converters stolen.

If you want to protect the cats, get full belly armor underneath. They make some other contraptions for protecting the cats too.

Or just cut your cats off preemptively and say F you to all your neighbors and the EPA

Toyota was well aware of cat theft on Tacoma's so they moved them higher up on the 3rd Gen so they are not easily accessible.

A full skid plate would make it a bit harder to steal your cats...but then again skid plates themselves are pretty easy to unbolt.

A determined and well equipped thief can steal damn near anything...do what you can with common sense measures, don't over think it and if all else fails you've got insurance.

As for your tailgate, I always have it locked and it has never been an issue even when I lived in a not so great neighborhood and my truck sat in the driveway at all times on a busy street. You can only steal it if you can tilt/open it.

Had the cat. converter stolen off my 88 pickup about ten years ago. What they didn't know was I already hollowed it out with a balljoint pickle fork! Came back and it was cut and sitting in the bed of the truck :D

Thanks! and yes I agree about what a determined thief is capable of.

If they do steal the truck, yes there is insurance. However I hope i don't see it again. Just replace it thanks. Different story for a custom, hard to replace older model tho.

Anyhow, Sounds like my tailgate will be okay if left locked with a Tonneau cover.

The cats being stolen is a tough one to defend against other than booby traps and or insurance.

get a manual trans and that'll deter at least 95% of theft attempts

    Yes no doubt.

Drove manual for years. It gets dodgy when you have to take it in for service tho and no one can drive into the shop.

Agreed. I had a manual car for years and would take forever at the shop as no one knew how to drive it.

Any vehicle is one minute away from being stolen. I have witnessed a roll back wrecker roll up, winch already unspooled, hook it up and high speed cable it on the flat bed in under a minute. Nothing you can do except physically block it in.
In the US we have guns tho.

In my repo days with a hidden wheel lift, if all goes well, never exit the truck, pick, and go. Gotta stop a little ways down the road to attach wheel straps and better have already scoped the vin, but yea you're outta there.
