How-To: 6-Speed Manual Transmission Oil Change

I use the MT90 in the transmission and transfer case and then cheaper Lucas Oil in the diffs.

 

I just swapped redline mt90 for the trans but plan on using redline mt-lv for the TC. I haven't don't it yet though since everyone here said their changes at 30,45,50 still looked brand new so I'm probably swap at 50 myself.

 

I just did all mine last night, cept the front diff. MT-90 coming out the trans still looked really good, even though it was way over due. I put Redline 75w90NS back in the transfer and MT-90 back in the trans. Squeeze pouches Valvoline in the Diff. I re-used the pouches for the transfer case, dumped the Redline into them. Made life much easier. Used a bug sprayer for the tranny. Pump it up, lock the thumb button down, and walk away. Not sure i waited so long to do this. Way easier and less mess.

 

i have a 2005 tacoma manual tran 5 speed can i use the mt lv for the tranny ( low velocity )

 

There's a much simpler way to refill the transmission with gear oil remove your center console and unbolt the shifter from the top of the transmission and you can fill it directly from there. By simply pouring it Directly into the gearbox, The added benefit is you also lubricate the parts connected to the shift handle.

 

No but he gives great guesses I’ve been a licensed mechanic since 1978 so I’ve seen different oils. The great GL4 vs GL5 debate is pure horse shit. The GL5 is backwards compatible except in transaxles that operate at high temps. Your Toyota trans is not one of them. Also check the specs GL5 meets and exceeds specs for GL4. Personally I made the switch to Redline MT90 for my 2006 X Runner before it reached 100k miles and the shifts improved became more smooth and I left it in when I sold the truck at 145k a few years ago. Sometimes wish I had it back because although it was useless as a hauler it was fun to drive. Here it is doing yard work.

 

I was thinking this was the case..
I have the TRD short shifter I need to install = that access hole to the tranny..
I figured with 60k miles, it wouldn't hurt to flush this out while I am taking it half apart anyway.

So to ask a question about doing this, once I have the shifter/top hole open:
loosen fill plug, loosen/open drain plug and drain off old fluid - replace drain plug; remove fill plug - add new fluid from top till it comes out the fill hole; replace fill plug and finish short shifter install - something like that..

Does this sound right?

 

That sequence is exactly what I did. Worked great except I found the oil drained into the trans slowly. But pumping into the fill hole is usually painfully slow as well...

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 for the manual trans? If so, what'd you think about it? I forget what I put in last but there's been a chirp coming from the trans I believe so I'll be changing the fluids soon in hopes of getting rid of the chirp.

 

The chirp is more than likely coming from the throw out bering.
