I hate that the 3rd-gen Tacomas only come with one USB port capable of connecting my phone to Android Auto. Although wireless adapters are available to hide in the glove box, most of the options I’ve seen look messy and compromise the appearance and functionality of the stock USB data port. Additionally, I need to use a phone mount in my truck for work apps, which means I have to drape a USB cable over my center console to charge my phone or connect it to Android Auto.
In the attached write-up, I’ve detailed how I installed an additional Android Auto-compatible USB cable behind the dash, which connects to my phone while preserving the stock USB port's appearance and functionality. This setup really cleaned up the look of my dash, maintained the stock appearance, and added the convenience of charging my phone and connecting to Android Auto while it's mounted on the dash. This method could also be used to add an additional Android Auto-compatible USB port in the center console.
Please read the limitations outlined in the attached PDF to see if this approach suits your needs before attempting it. If this solution has already been shared, I apologize for any overlap in ideas. I was unable to find this exact solution. I welcome any feedback or suggestions for improvement.

Dude, this is fantastic, thank you. I've been thinking about the same thing, but I want to try it with an android auto hookup and a USB thumb drive loaded with mp3s

@Jaragon thanks man! Unfortunately if you do the usb and phone route, the usb will not be able to play music while your phone is plugged in. The head unit can not accept two inputs at a time and will default to the android auto connection. :(

Has anyone tried using a usb hub instead of the splitter? It could actually be used to upgrade the charging abilities of the ports and might actually allow a thumb drive and phone at the same time. Or it might not work at all.....

Thanks for this! I’m going to use this setup to hide my wireless CarPlay adapter behind the dash and leave my usb port empty for whatever. Much appreciated.
