New to me 06 dbl cab 4x4 203k miles. Also first Tacoma I’ve owned. Excellent CarFax history. Just purchased after two test drives without issue. On the way home, the shudder began going uphill at 30mph. To say I’m pissed is an understatement!

I had a trans flush done at a local shop and drove a few more miles. Shudder is still there. I was wondering if I should try shudder fix with the new fluid. If so, how do I add just that small amount of fluid?

Based on what I’ve read, it seems like the same trans issue many have. U-joints look like they may have been replaced at one point. I haven’t been under it on a lift with wheels off the ground to see if there is play in the joints though.

    I appreciate any feedback!

Does the shudder stop if you LIGHTLY apply the brakes while still accelerating?
When you do this, it unlock the converter briefly, and the shudder should stop.
Once you let off the brake pedal, it should return.

Or drive in 4th gear and see if the shudder goes away, or is much less noticeable.

As for the Shudder Fix additive, LubeGuard is the one that seems to be the most recommended with good results. Follow the direction on the bottle.

I have not tried to apply the brakes while also still accelerating during the shudder. I will give that a shot. Typically, I just let off the accelerator, coast for a second and then back on the accelerator.

I will try running in 4th as well.

As for the Lubegard Shudder Fix, my question more specifically was how to I add it to the “sealed” trans? I have a hand pump siphon. Would that possibly work? Do I add it to the some fill port on the top or side of the trans?

    Thanks!

You add it to the fill port on the side of the transmission.
You will need a pump. It can be done with a long tube and funnel, but you’ll be there awhile waiting for it to drain down the hose.

    1. Torque:
      20 N*m{ 205 kgf*cm , 15 ft.*lbf } for overflow plug
      39 N*m{ 400 kgf*cm , 29 ft.*lbf } for refill plug

Awesome, thanks. I assume that the small amount of the shudder fix going in won’t require me to bleed off any additional fluid?

Ideally, you want drain out what you put in.
I believe the LubeGuard is 10oz.
Personally, I wouldn’t worry about 10oz over full.
But that’s not “the right” advice.

I, myself, would crack the over flow open.
Let as much come out as I can, or until gets to 10oz. (Or what ever the bottle holds)
Tighten the overflow back up, and pour the LubeGuard in.

Thanks. Should I get the trans warm first, or is it okay to be cold? The shudder fix is only 2oz.

If you are using the over flow plug, more will come out of the transmission if it is warm. The reason is suggested using the over flow is for “controlled release”. If you are using the drain plug, no need to get it warm. It will rush out….FAST.

You might not get 10oz out of the over flow. Like I said earlier, 10oz isn’t something I’m going to worry about. But it’s your truck. You can make the call there.

I edited my post too late, but the lubegard shudder fix is only a 2oz tube. Based on that and what you are advising, should be an issue at all.

    Thanks!

No. I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Just an update… I was able to get the shudder fix in and it helped a bit. The trans seems to hunt less for gears and the shudder reduced some. So, still unsure what the exact cause may be.

The plugs, best I can tell via CarFax, could have as many as 80k miles on them.

    Any next steps to try?

Does it still shudder in 4th?

The plugs are likely not the cause.
But they are “supposed to” be change every 30k.
Can’t hurt to change them, but I didn’t suspect you’ll see a change in the shudder.

Thanks! I drove it around in 4th a little and didn’t notice the shudder.

I figured the plugs weren’t the cause, but I bet they need to be changed either way.

I have read about a lot of u joint issues. Can I really only check the play in the joint with the wheels off the ground, or would there be detectable play if it was on the ground but in neutral??

Any other input on what to do next?? Driving in 4th is good, but otherwise the shudder is still there, only slightly better than before adding the shudder fix.

Should I replace the Ujoints and see if that helps? Seems to me based on the behavior of the trans though, that it is the issue

If it’s better in 4th, and not 5th. It’s likely the torque converter. You might want to have a transmission shop give you their opinion.
