Get an SSP and it will act "normal" for most situations.

I can honestly tell you the shifting gets way better after 1000-1500 miles on its own. Currently at 19k

I don't mind it at all. The only thing that used to annoy me was when id push the accelerator down a bit to get ahead of some one in traffic with no response. so you push just a bit more then the tranny thinks your trying to race and down shifts who knows how many gears. then you look like an idiot driving. I've just gotten used to pushing the ect button for those scenarios now and haven't had any issues. still love my truck and wouldn't trade it for anything else

Let the OP make that decision. If he likes how they drive better than the Taco he should buy one.

Really good review of the Taco and may address some of your questions. Go to 11:48 for driving impressions.

Essentially what everyone else has been saying. The engine in lower gears wants to keep it as low RPM as possible for fuel efficiency. So it seems like it's sluggish. Once you get to the higher gears and rpms it really gets going. ECT button gets rid of the tendency of keeping it in lower rpms. Also the shift sense and ov tune options.

Almost 13k miles and no issues. It's a proven engine in other cars.

Always the same argument on TW :). Everyone has an opinion, and gives it .
    That's where it deteriorates !
Of course the OP will make there "own" decision. Probably based on facts, and maybe some bias .
Nobody is right or wrong when giving opinions, but that's where the defense mechanism's kick in ...just saying in general...not singling out .

I recently commented on the SavageGeese "Slick Taco" review. I asked him how the driving impression compared to the GM twins, and he said he preferred the GM transmission but would still buy the Taco for reliability. I don't believe that GM vehicles are inherently unreliable, my family has had pretty good luck with them, but I would prob buy the Taco for that reason too.

I also drove a Frontier DCSB earlier this year, and I really like the way that truck drove. That 4.0 felt really ballsy, I was impressed with it. Of course that's the ONLY thing I like about that truck. Everything else about it is dated AF. (Though oddly enough, it has rear disk brakes. Hmmmm.....)

I also agree that GM quality is probably not as bad as it used to be. Probably because it couldn't get any worse lol. For ME personally, there were other issues with the Colorado. 1) Ground clearance. Even in their offroad package the ground clearance was abysmal. Maybe they expect a big lift, but the tacoma stock has good ground clearance. 2) Interior. I hate Chevy interiors. They look and feel super cheap. 3) Don't like the exterior looks.

The twins have a long way to go to get anywhere near Toyota's reputation of reliability.

I actually like how the Colorado and canyon drove but could not get comfortable in the power seats no matter how hard I tried. I always had to adjust the headrest too because I kept brushing the back of my head against it. I really hated the seats bUT liked the powe delivery.

Nissan felt a bit unrefined but most truck like.

Toyota had the most comfortable seats and I really enjoyed how it drove once I learned how to configure for different conditions. Even drove a few left over 15s but the 3rd gen just felt like a better overall package to me.

I spent 3 months looking and driving before I finally decided on the Toyota but at least I knew when finished it was the truck I wanted.

My 17 year old GM car runs great ('00 Firebird Formula LS1), so I DO have some faith in GM. 133K on it and everything still works, though the build quality on the interior is not the best. Gets 25mpg+ on the highway and does MEAN burnouts :D

Anyway, I agree with you on the GM trucks. The exterior looks dated, though I like the GMC nose. If they had come out in like '10 or so they would have done great. The interior looks "ok", though I haven't sat in one. Honestly I think the Tacos is very awkward looking, but I sat in one and it seemed functional and decently laid out, thought WTF IS UP with the same cruise control stalk from the 90's??? Even my 97 Jeep had it on the wheel, where it belongs.

GM trucks sit WAY too low, that approach angle is shameful. The fullsize GM's are the same way, they've been like that longer than I've been alive. I had a squarebody when I was in high school, and with a 4" lift and 35's it sat at about the same height as my dad's stock 98 Ram 1500 4x4.

I think regardless of experiences and taste the approach angle cannot be argued. Never understood why they are like that. The Silverados are worst imo, they're like street cars lol.
