the timeline changed a bit, they can do it before a year IF (and that's a big IF) you are as qualified as you can get at the unit you are attached to. Some can't get warfare pins, some jobs have easier to obtain qualifications, but your CO/XO/CMC have to recommend you to start classes before that year. I know our admin folks in the squadron were allowed to once they got their EAWS because there wasn't much more they could really do.

Yep, at my first command they would allow it before a year as well. So long as you met certain requirements, i.e. weren't a piece of shit

I looked at all the branches! Army felt like the mass-pool for military interest, the Air Force had good career options but felt more restrictive on it's promotions and if I went for the Marines (personal standing) I would join to fight and since I don't have a desire for strong combat, I went with the Navy for better career options and less-restrictive promotion opportunities.

LOL I meant 0/10 I would not marry her again because she's in the Air Force. Poor wording on my part on that joke.

    She's a doctor.

Not to dissuade you from the Navy, but that is also a positive of the Army as well. It is so big, the sky is the limit for promotion. It is far easier to make rank in the Army, most fast trackers are doing E7 in 7, in some career fields E8 can be had in as little as 10 (not normal at all). If combat is not your thing as you mentioned though, I would stay away. Even if less and less people are deploying, that's not a mindset many take kindly too in the Army or Marines.

Agreed. Pros and Cons to all the branches. Promotion wise the Army is definitely the way to go. If you're looking at 5-6yrs and getting out with a job that transfers over without hassle, then Navy or Air Force.

I initially started my search with the intention of going with Army but I started looking at the career options after I did my time and the Navy seemed to offer more solid options that would hold up better with better-paying jobs in the civilian sector.

It definitely is not ideal, but I'm really only talking about career fields where that sort of thing is resolved anyway. If you make E7 and can't hack it, you will be driven out. Doubly so for E8. Unfortunately by the time you make E9 I think we all know how that goes.

If the long term goal is to be an Officer, just finish out school now if you can. Look at all the services for the best fit. Most even offer to pay off up to 60K or 80k in student loans once you commission (for a time commitment of course). I think you are doing the right thing looking at this as a long term goal. Don't rush the decision, the military isn't going anywhere.

I'd love to stay out and finish school but certain life events have literally left me with two decisions: join the military and accept the suck and benefits of that or be left in a 9-5 office job with no chances of paying to further my education and going nowhere fast at the age of 22

I’m in aviation, this may be the same for other parts of the Navy- when you finish your rating’s “A” school, after boot camp, the class is show all the duty stations available to the class. Top of the class picks first and so on, bottom gets stuck with whatever’s left over. Bust your ass in “A” school within a rating you know you can dominate and pick a shore command first- we were allowed to attend college almost immediately, as long as we were making constant progress on our licenses and qualifications. Get as much college under your belt in that 4-5 year contract. THEN GET OUT. Enjoy a brick and mortar university with all the experiences that come along with it. Your GI/post 9-11 is only good for 3 years of college btw, the reason you’ll need to try finish freshman year in the service. Earn a 3.0 GPA in any engineering or 3.5 in anything else. Any service and almost any designator you want, ESPECIALLY if you have an engineering degree. You don’t need to go to Yale either, I’ve met plenty of OCS officers from small public colleges you’ve never seen play football on Saturday.
