How to best stop tire rub?

So my '04 SR5 Tacoma has been running on 4runner wheels for a while now. The wheels came with Michelin radials in 265/75r16 in really good shape, so (even though I prefer all-terrains) I decided to keep them for now. However, at full lock they rub on the frame.

So, I'm wondering what the easiest and cheapest way to keep that from happening is. Now, bear in mind, I've been a Jeep guy for years and this is my first Toyota. So, I'm a little ignorant as to mods on Taco, but I'm learning, just a little confused on this issue.

I'm undecided on whether or not I'm going to lift the truck. I know on a Jeep, one could do a budget boost for a couple hundred bucks with no real repercussions on rest of the works (linkage, brake lines, drop brackets, etc). Is there something similar I could do to my Tacoma?

Or would it be better to go with wheel spacers? I'm pretty averse to these since I think they put strain on other parts, but I wouldn't need much...

On my last Jeep, I also had a little rub at full lock so I simply backed out the steering stops, put a couple washers on the bolt and screwed it back in. It made the turning radius slightly wider, but worked. I don't suppose the steering stops on a Toyota are anywhere near that simple, huh?

When I go to replace tires, maybe I should just go with a narrower tire. What would a good choice be? 265/70r26? 31x10.5x16? (I think that's right, not used to metric tires yet).

Or should I just live with the rub and occasionally hit the spot rubbed to metal with some Krylon?

I'd just get some spider trax wheel spacers, or if you wanna spend a lil more get different offset wheels:/

After doing a TON of searching here on the forum, I'm seriously considering this route.

It seems like my best option would be new shocks all around and an AAL. I'm confused a little about whether or not I would need any sort of drop brackets or have trouble with vibrations. Thoughts?

You won't need a drop bracket of any sort, you can get up to about 3" of lift with stock control arms without binding anything too bad. You may get some slight driveline vibrations when you lift the back end, there are several remedies for that such as rear axle shims and a carrier bearing drop, depending on how much the vibes annoy you.

I'm running 265/70r16 Michelins and 16" stock rims from a 2002 Tacoma, and they don't rub at all. This is the stock size tire for my truck. Replacing those 4runner rims might also solve the rubbing issue (the backspacing might be different, not sure)

Funny you mention the backspacing. I think of that until today. I really like the looks of the wheel (and way better than the factory steelies) so I don't really want to replace them.

I know the TRD's came with that size tire, so I just assumed my suspension has sagged a bit (and that could well the case) letting them rub.

I'm kinda stuck on the idea of a lift now. :D

not sagged. 265/75r16 is about an inch taller than 265/70r16.

This. It's all in the right backspacing.

A lift will only help with rubbing at ride height.

Any amount of suspension bump travel and turning, and you'll still be hitting the frame. Just get the smallest hubcentric wheel spacers you can get away with that push the wheels out. Otherwise wheels with less backspacing.

    Yes another excellent point.

Nah, I'm just thinking about the money. (Trying to finish home renovations, you know. But yeah, A little lift would be cool regardless.)

With my luck, I'd space 'em and the tires would rub on something else. So... both, amirite?

A cross between a Tacoma and Jeep sounds pretty BA actually, haha.

Hey, just did a quick google search on my break. I was hoping to find something like a 1/2" spacer, but everything I see is 1.12" or 2". Anyone know of anything slimmer? I don't need much here.
