I rarely buy new. I rarely buy from a dealer.

I often buy from friends/coworkers whom I've observed how they care for the vehicle, and who are frustrated with trying to get a good value for a trade in with it.

I purchased a TRD OR from Bill Dube in Toyota in Dover after they agreed to find and match the out the door price of exactly the truck I wanted that was gettign delivered to Toyota of Nashua. In fact, they redirected the truck Toyota of Nashua was getting delivered that I almost put a deposit down on. It eventually saved me money and time because Dover is 15 minute drive from my house, while nashua is about a 2 hour round trip. I was very happy with the price.

I have no qualms about recommending either. I've heard good things about portsmouth toyota as well.

I wouldn't necessarily marry yourself to a dealer. It's much easier and less stressful dealing with the internet salesfolk and playing several dealerships against each other via email. Get quotes emailed, and if there's one you like, but it's a dealership a bit aways, ask a local one to match and get the vehicle you want. I used the truecar app/website at first and that got me in touch with several dealerships internet salespeople to start the process.

I think it's a less stressful process if you can narrow down exactly what you want (model, trim, colors, packages) first and then start the shopping process. Just because a dealership doesn't have it on the lot doesn't mean they won't want to work with you getting exactly what you want at a fair price.

I agree. Wish I had a couple of these friends.... ;)
Just cruised Portsmouth's lot yesterday afternoon. Nothing jumped out...

Spoke at length with a guy at Nashua who was "reaching out to me"
(if I hear that phrase once more from these clowns I think I'll puke !)
Anyway after I told him how much I hate dealership shenanigans he agreed and ended the conversation, saying "everyone does". Haven't heard nothin' back ....

One clarification, Dover had a $1000 destination charge, while Nashua's was $495. Dover worked it out to give me the exact out the door price as Nashua by matching the vehicle cost plus fees. I'm not sure if that meant they matched the destination fee, or dropped the vehicle cost or some combination.... I don't care because the out the door price was exactly the same (and it was a price I was ok with paying).

Nashua and Dover traded vehicles (Nashua drove mine to dover, and drove something off dover's lot back). So in the end, Dover got one off their lot. I'm not sure the advantage to Nashua to do this. maybe they got a vehicle from Dover that is historically easier to sell than the package I got? Maybe someone here in the business knows.

Limiting your selection and potential supply by insulting salespeople and giving them the impression you're going to be a difficult customer to the point they won't call you back doesn't help you at all.

Edit to add: you know what does help... dropping the word "holdback" when negotiating (something like "If you're willing to bite into your holdback a little bit, I think we can make a deal fast"). At the very least it tells the salespeople that you have done your research so doing any dealership shenanigans is pointless for them. But do your research first on what holdback is.

Probably right about that.... I wasn't being a dink about it, but kind of telling him how I felt about past experiences. I was thinking he was going to come back telling me how their dealership could "earn and keep my business" and make all a pleasant transaction, but nothing.

They will absolutely sell below invoice, if you don't get them to, you didn't try hard enough. Go in at end of month, like last day, go in later in the day, show them that you are serious, I carry a checkbook in my hand so they know I am here to make a deal. If you don't have confidence, this can backfire or look like you are desperate, its a fine line. I straight up say "I want that car, I want it today, what can we do?" and go from there. But I do it later in the day because Human nature kicks in and they get hungry, want to get off their shift, want to go home, are thinking about the weekend, etc and to just roll another under their belt can work.

I feel this is a pretty good explanation of the car buying process and where a vehicle can be sold for a fair price (for the buyer and the dealer).

    https://www.carbuyingtips.com/carintro.html

The only caveat is that I am suspicious of all the websites this site recommends (I'm suspicious they paid to have them placed in the guide). but as a source of information on the car buying process it's pretty good, imo.

1.) I research the living heck out of the car or truck I want.
2.) I find the exact model, add-on, color you name it. This is usually from, manufactures websites,Nada, Edmunds, KBB, forums, etc...
3.) I also like to research the dealers on who is a volume dealer, my local dealer always get my service, due to convenience.
4.) I e-mail every dealer in NH, VT, & MA looking for their price, kicking tires, but by this time I am serious about getting said vehicle. My e-mail is very basic form is My name and I am looking for this vehicle, color, add-ons etc.. what is your best price?
5.) After getting all e-mails I contact the 3 lowest and most serious/interested dealer and see if they will be more flexible on price.
6.) Now that I have three dealers "fighting" for my business, I choose the lowest, reputable, volume and make a appointment.
    - Test drive - fall in love with the Silver DCSB 6spd MT Taco!! and try not to get emotions involved, its business -
7.) Negotiate - I always am ready to say NO, luckily I have never been in a spot where I needed a new/replacement car ASAP.
8.) Get the sales manager to say "no, not possible" to your terms and walkout. Don't be unreasonable or a dick, but have a damn good idea what a good deal is due to all of your research, which I usually have printed in hand. They will call usually quickly or in Toyota's case not let you walk-out.
9.) Once you have your deal, then talk trade in and repeat 7 and 8, again I have my research in-hand on trade in values and speed dial to the local dealer of my trade in.
10.) No you are happy with your deal, dealer is happy sign the paper and I always say no to that extra crap!

This is the basics of how I buy a new car. Hope this helps, cheers!

The house always wins, but YOU hold all the cards.

They win because they just got rid or unloaded a liability, paid the rent, and may have made a profit, so its a win!

The end of the month rules still works I believe, this is the time when they turn in all their sales figures and it may last up until the 3rd into the new month so no rush.

A bad month for them maybe the best month for you. If its been raining or bad weather for the last few days or week, all the better for you IMO.

Be prepared in knowing what you want and checking all the prices as mentioned here. Be prepared to walk off and don't worry, they have your number and will call you with an offer or try to convince you they gave you the best offer.

The trick for you is to know if you have the best offer in your area.

I don't worry so much about the trade in figures or down payment because the minute you drive in, they're assessing your drive in vehicle, all eyes are on you. Like a pack of wolfs salivating a meal, and that is what we are. Literally lol!

I do worry about the total price of the deal, or OTD price.

The trade-in, monthly note are just smoke and mirrows to hide the eventual cash price at the end of the road. Keep this (OTD) price up front and center.

They can adjust either the trade-in price value or new vehicle price as need be to get where they want, you just need to know that it's where you want to be at the end.

Great advice here on tactics already, just practice and keep your eyes on the bottom line.

    Best of luck
    Cheers!

My intuition is that quotes can be repeated after the weekend, unless there's manufacturers rebates that expire. What you probably risk by waiting is buying when there is less inventory of that model year.

Plus, if you are apprehensive about being the victim of dealer shenanigans, the shenanigans probably get ramped up because so many more people are likely out shopping and there's more rubes available.

The dealership is holding all the cards, unfortunately.

But, as long as you are not in a hurry and willing to walk away as many times as it takes, you might be satisfied with what you end up paying. Shop around and do your homework, obviously. The worst time to buy a car is when you are desperate.

Enjoy all the fake smiles, weak and insincere handshakes and free bottled water in the mean time.
