Don't over complicate this nonsense. You hold most of the power. Without your money, the dealership fails. They want to sell cars. The biggest points to remember, 1) the dealer won't lose money on the deal 2) do your research and know what they car is worth 3) get quotes for the same vehicle from every dealer in your area 4) pick your favorite dealer, ask them to match the best quote you received.

    Loose nut behind the wheel.
x2 on don't overcomplicate. Great info here, but this knee jerk animosity towards salesman is unnecessary and counterproductive. You want a fair price without ruining your week, sales guy wants a fair profit without ruining his. You also want good rapport down the line. Take your time, follow the steps and talk about their holdback when the time comes. If there's a dealer you think you'd prefer to give your business to, save him for later in the process so you can bring a competitive internet sales quote, credit union APR, and calm demeanor to the table. Just my 0.2

This is all great advice. Just remember that no matter how much you like it, you have the power to walk away. There are always other dealerships.

You hold all the cards. Without you - no sale and no commission. Yes the dealership has many tricks, but do your research and stick to your bottom line. Just be ready to walk. If they are making money on the deal they will do it.

Would be nice to order it online and just have it delivered...and cut out all the dealer/salesman BS all together.

I bought my XC70 from Grapponne Honda 5 years ago. They were terrific to deal with, it was a painless transaction.

When I told them I had my own financing, they matched the rate, so I want with them. Also, I traveled from RI to NH to get the car, and they delivered it to me in RI a few days later after prepping it.

No, no it does not. It's a joke. You can get a better deal then Costco . Just offer $500 over invoice. It's a cost all dealers extend to each other's friends and families. And no there are not multible invoices. That's illegal.

The "game" is played by both sides. The dealer is going to get a profit just like any other business. Go in and offer $500 over invoice on the vehicle you want. That's a number that all dealers extend to one another's friends and families.
    Have fun.

I'm surprised with 160k plus membership TW has not formed a price benefit with Toyota dealerships. It would be easy and beneficial to both sides, for both vehicles parts and service.

What's invoice? Do you mean msrp?

Last time I checked we aren't very clear on what the dealerships are paying for these trucks.

No, invoice is the owners cost. He also gets a small percentage from factory called holdback. Most dealers will give you $500 over on a straight deal. If there is a trade involved you will get what it's worth wholesale. Remember there in the business to make money like anyone else. However if your trading in a Tacoma it's worth more then wholesale book. Toyota dealers go to auctions to purchase inventory. When a Tacoma rolls through they are typically bidding on it with everyone else and the prices go wild on them. Be reasonable on your trade if you have one. But do your homework and find out what your trades value is before you go in. Reasonable is not wanting what the dealer is asking for:). 500-1000 over wholesale book is reasonable depending on your trucks milage and any adds. Go in with a good attitude, not with the attitude your going to do battle. Just like anyone else dealership employees like to take care of there customers, but friendly customers get more then combative customers. Just like you would tend to do I'm sure.

P.S. Costco pricing is way above $500 over. Dealers love to get Costco customers :).

That's the problem...no one knows what "invoice" is so this whole suggestion quickly becomes useless in the real world.

It's easy to say "just offer them $500 above invoice". It's another thing entirely to know what the invoice is or what the dealer paid.

When you offer $500 over invoice or any other number over invoice and its accepted, the dealer will show invoice to you. I just sent my sister to a dealer I did not know and they gave her the $500 over invoice on a new Tacoma sport and showed invoice.
The next question will be " how do I know it's the real invoice"? Dealers pay millions of dollars to buy there Toyota franchises . They are among the most expensive dealerships to buy. Dealerships are also heavily regulated both federally and locally by the state they do business in. Contrary to belief there not going to lie or steal to make a few extra dollars.
If you go in to a dealership and treat the employees with the same respect you want them to treat you with they will bend over backwards to take care of you.
$500 over invoice is a easy quick deal for dealerships . It is true if you go in just before closing deals typically go faster as like anyone employees want to go home.
Rainy days are great when your ready to buy as there typically slower etc...

Remember a dealer or its employees will not risk there livelyhood to try to cheat you. They are all very well compensated.

Invoice is what the dealer paid.
