@hiPSI is correct, fuel is not counted against payload. I have a 38 gal tank and 1185 lbs. of payload. If I reduced my payload for the weight of the fuel I couldn't haul my pomeranian in my Tundra. And yes, I have weighed it empty and loaded.

I took his response was as fuel does go against payload. Maybe I took it wrong but I don't think fuel goes against payload.

Payload is calculated with a full tank of fuel.

    From a quick Google search:

Payload is stated on the door sticker and includes everything your vehicle left the factory with, and a full tank of fuel. Anything beyond that, including a driver or accessories must be deducted from payload.Jul 27, 2015

However it leaves the plant and any additional port mods.
However... different manufacturers do it different ways. Remember, a "payload" number is whatever number the manufacturer is willing to accept liability to handle. It's a combination of "real" numbers from engineering and "legal" numbers from the lawyers. For example, when a manufacturer buys trucks to convert into wreckers or motorhomes, they change the payload numbers because they accept the liability for those numbers.

Pretty sure all US light trucks adhere to industry standard J2807 now for determining payload?

Understood and agree, but those are minimum to pass test. For example, several times I exceeded rated payload in my Tacoma and it did fine. My point is the payload numbers are numbers the manufacturer will guarantee. The aftermarket guys put a service or wrecker bed on it and legally change the payload to numbers they guarantee.

Keep googling and you’ll find many different answers. The correct answer is each mfg (and even model) is different. Sometimes the manual states exactly what’s included, sometimes it doesn’t. The one true way to really know your payload is to go get on a scale.

I agree with this. While you shouldn't go over the ratings, they are set by the manufacturer and have some margin for error (payload capacities differ between the same vehicles in different countries). Additionally, there's more to it than one number. The amount of weight over each axle also matters (this is why 5th wheels and goosenecks exist). The weight distribution hitch DOES weigh something, but at the same time moves some of the weight to the truck's front axle. Because of this, I usually leave them out of the payload calculation. If you go slow with a trailer brake, you should be fine, however, after using this setup for awhile you might realize you want to upgrade. Just my $0.02. While the Tacoma is a small pickup, 4,000lbs is not extreme and I frequently see them tow similar setups on the interstate.

That aside, I also agree with the users that have suggested weighing the trailer and tongue weight of the loaded trailer. It's good to know what you are dealing with.

After reviewing the J2807 standard it appears I was mistaken (and confused). The standard seems to only apply to GCWR for towing. At any rate, I've weighed my Tundra and I'm confident that fuel is not deducted from payload. I think the calculations in the manual also confirm this.

Just for giggles and shits I put my Tacoma on a set of scales we use for corner balancing at work. It looks like with a family of 4 I can haul a wet fart.

Edit. This was with a full tank of fuel and 60ish pounds of Goodwill stuff in the bed.
