So I decided after seeing my ridiculous $437 California registration renewal fee that I don’t want my custom plates anymore considering that adds an extra $40.

what’s the best way of going about this? I normally renew my reg. online, but of course there’s no option to remove the custom plates.

Guessing I’ll have to go into the DMV most likely. Calling them is impossible with Corona bullshit.

    Thanks!

I work with dmv. And like whatscp said above, you’re going to have to go in and get new plates (sequential). You’ll keep your old personalized ones. Hang em up in your garage; let it remind you of simpler times.

I just got my $477 reg fee bill the other day. YUP. they’ll keep taxing us gas and reg fees to provide money to an ass backward$ state..... But Ya know....the weathers REAL NICE.

**edit** I just clicked the above link. I don’t remember surrendering anything fwiw.

The last time I did this when I sold a car with personalized plates I just got new plates from dmv (sequential) in person and I kept my personalized plates. They said you bought em you can keep them.

    Just keep it dude.

It’s $40 more than what you’re going to pay.. and it’s probably going to be a headache now

It's probably gonna take you five hours to figure it out, anyway. Are you willing to do that for 8$ and hour?

What's an extra $3.33 per month at that point?

I know, I know. $40 isn’t worth the hassle I’m starting to realize I’ll go through. Probably just drop ‘em next year after all this Covid BS dies down.

I’d say fuck this state, but I still choose to live here so lol

Go to a DMV and get a lost registration/license plate form. Take a 22 dollar check with you, fill out the form and put it in the provided envelope and put it in the box out front. In 5 days you will have your new plates. This was my process about week ago... the day DMV's reopened to appointments only, but you can't make an appointment until they get caught up with the backlog of appointments that were canceled for the last 3 months.

There's probably a fee involved. I've never liked personalized plates because it cost more money to be unique and regular plates are going to be unique anyway... and I can't see my plates when I'm behind the wheel.

Adding a cap will take the commercial status of the registration away.
