My work truck definitely needs a transmission fluid change. 140,000 miles on the same oil. I'm going to do it myself because the shops charge close to $200.

Is there a step by step how to on this forum somewhere? I know how to do pretty much anything on cars, but when it comes to the transmission I've only worked on manual transmissions, but my work truck is automatic. I just want to make sure I do it correctly.

And what type of fluid do I need and how many quarts? Thanks.

EDIT: This is a 2001 tacoma

i changed mine a few months back and all i did was just drain the pan, then refill with about 2 quarts. I drove around for a couple of weeks and did it again, and then last week i did it for a third time. I read on another post that this methods gets about 95-98% of the old fluid out, and is a whole lot easier and cheaper than a complete flush. hope this helps. p.s. look at the dipstick on the tranny fill, it tells you what type of fluid to use.

Since your at 140,000 mi i would change your tranny filter as well and the gasket seal. Just go to a auto zone and ask for the tranny fluid, gasket, sealant, and filter and they'll get you squared away for less than $60.

I heard that if you have not changed your transmission fluid in such a long time (or ever) that you should not change it. Not so for Toyota ?
