how to change sparkplugs 2TR-FE

    K&N Drop-in airfilter, secondary airfilter removed, Satoshi Mod, Kenwood Stereo System, Gibson catback system , Painted Steelies, Offroad Lights, Fatbob's spacer lift
    Since I haven't seen a write up on the 2TR for the sparkplugs and my first time was trial by fire, I've decided to do one for the guys on here.

    everything you'll need:

    10mm socket
    1/4" drive Rachet
    extension
    9/16" sparkplug socket
    philips head screwdriver
    flat head screwdriver
    new sparkplugs (i used NGK laser Iridiums)
    anti-sieze (highly recommended if you don't want the threads to break off next time)

    Step one:
    Dismantle the Intake starting with the s bend piece, then remove all the bolts holding the intake (resonater/silencer?). the bolts are marked in red. Then disconnect the pieces marked in blue.

    movew the larger thing out of the way so you have full access to the top of the engine. Start unplugging the conntecor going to the sparkplugs. Those are marked in blue. then loosen the bolts holding the coil in place. Those are marked in red.

    one at a time remove and replace the sparkplugs going from front to back. makesure you have an extension that will reach all the way down to the spark plugs and leaves you alittle room to work with. when you go to put in the new sparkplug be sure to put a line of anit-sieze on the threads. it make it alot easier to replace the next set you get. DON'T BE LIKE ME AND DO THIS AFTER YOU JUST TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. DO THIS WHEN THE ENGINE HAS COOLED OFF UNLESS YOU ENJOY GETTING BURNED! :eek:

    after you have replaced all four sparkplugs put everything back in where it came from.

    Note: I am not responsible for any accidents/personal injury/damage to vehicle. if you mess this up then you don't belong under the hood of any car or truck. :D

    Any spark plug change must be done on a COLD engine.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Because the heat makes the aluminum head softer, and more likely to strip threads. Also, as it expands with heat, you might think the plugs are torqued, but when it cools, they can become loose. Ive seen a few times when the plugs have loosened to the point that they shoot out of the head, and put a little dent in the hood.

    Check your manual for the suggested change interval. Stock plug from the dealer work great.

    Hey G3,

    Just coming up on 10k, i'm sure the plugs are fine, i was planning
    on getting in there and taking a look at gaps, wear etc...for the hell
    of it...GF is out of town this weekend, so i was hoping to have a truck
    tech weekend.

    I'll probably use NGK's if i do change them, but i'll see what the Denso's go for.

    btw, is there a special anti-seize to use?...while i have the plugs out
    i'm def. going to do that.

    Interesting. I thought Tacoma recommends 2.7 change at 100,000 and 4.0 at 30,000. My 2.7 has 43,000 - I don't think I'll wait for 100,000 but 10 seems premature - I'm sure they will be fine when you inspect them. I just use regular anti-seize - there may be other opinions. Toyota says no anti-seize but I don't want problems getting them out next time - dissimilar metals.

    sparkplus will run for sometime, my friend bought a silverado with 220k miles on it with the original sparkplugs in it. :eek:

    One reason not to run them for such a long time is that you will have a hard or impossible time getting them out. Once they break off in the head you are F'd. A lot of work and or $.
