Dang. I am not saying I do but what if you had a supercharger? They require a tune.

No. We can't go back. vF said that the software could have that functionality, but it has not happened yet.

It was talked about for a year now and the last feature release for the OG wired adapters was said to be done. Just error fixes and ECU additions.

I'm not quite sold on the wireless setup yet.

These tuners that have no issue charging 500 dollars a tune, but seem to go really quiet when issues like this start to pop up.

And back to my original question, I would think a tuner should be able to answer how I can tell if I have a tune or not? We’re not splitting atoms here, so there has to be an easy way to tell just based on an OBD scan read or something. Ugh

Correct. Nothing with a scan using a typical OBD adapter. With the vF or Toyota software, you would not get results using the Read ECU function, which generally doesn't yield much anyway.

I got the OTT tune for my 2020 2.7 and it passed emissions testing here in Texas

It’s already been answered. So far the answer is that there is a “most likely” way to tell but nobody has posted on here (to my knowledge) a definitive way to tell, aside from failing an emissions test apparently lol

ETA: have you driven another stock Tacoma? Anecdotally, every tune I’ve had has been a night and day difference and more than obvious that there was a tune. Obviously not definitive, but could help determine if it likely has had a tune or not.

The definitive way is via the CVN. It doesn’t take an emissions failure to “find out”.

Fortunately the Texas test does not check the CVN. It simply looks for error/ready codes and grabs a few emissions readings, which can then be used instead of the tailpipe sniffer.

Based on post #55 I don’t think OP will like this answer either.

I own a 2016 Taco and have not been sent anything regarding a smog check, yet. I am in CA. Registration is due in Feb so I will likely get the DMV letter in Dec or early Jan at the latest.

Yea but that tuner that posted here completely ignored it when asked.

I would be hesitant to get a tune if 5 years down the road I would have to deal with the ECU swapping BS.

A few have chimed in on here and the other thread. Unsurprisingly, they seem to view this “issue” as an anomaly or a non-issue.

Then shame on them. Their "non-issue" is clearly going to start becoming an issue to the people spending money on their tunes.

Emission testing is only going to get tighter and tighter.

Great information right here! I had a Vortech Supercharged G35 with the CARB legal kit when California rolled this out. The worst story I have seen is a poor guy with a 2004 Mustang Cobra that for some reason had a 2003 ECU. Despite passing visual and having all his EOs he failed based on the ECU. He ended up confirming with the dealer that even a new ECU from the dealer would still have the 2003 tune for the MY. Crazy stuff going on in this state and now sadly CO.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRZHzsVeMNw

My g35 had a piggyback for CARB which was nice as it was end user tunable. I’m getting a Magnuson thrown on my FJ right now and will have the TRD tune. If it’s too rich, the URD calibrator is made by split second and uses same tuning software as the G35.

I personally don't see it as a huge issue, and I'm not a tuner. Most tuners are in the beginning stages of figuring out workarounds. Looks like the idea of temporarily going back to a stock flash that has a registered CVN has been solved already.

There are Volkswagen tuners that have figured out how to manipulate the firmware to "spoof" a CVN so that their tune runs undetected. I'm betting that someone is going to figure out how to do that here.

I would read the other forum before going that far. Adam has been chiming in on the other thread with far more (or maybe just different) info. Adam has done all 3 of my tunes and would not remotely hesitate to have another one done by him again even with these emissions tests. However, I fully understand someone not wanting to take the risk based on the write up.
