From my g35 I had my stock ECU that was virgin and an Uprev flashed ECU that had a factory map with raised redline and their other features (launch control, 2-step), that allowed me to throw my factory ECU back in for smog. For those worried, by another ECU to get your flash and keep your OEM. I may do that in the future with a spicier tune for the Magnuson. Use the TRD tube with the appropriate Cal ID for smog…

Fight the power. Dismantle the government. Screw this gang green agenda. Better let your candidates know they need to fight against emissions regulations.

I wouldn't. The tune makes the Tacoma so much nicer to drive and tow with. If it ever comes to my state I will be getting another ECU to swap back and forth with.

It's not just as easy as swapping back and forth.

got a link? Sounds like a good read.

First I've heard of these issues, but I'm not surprised by any means. Considering the huge controversy over the Cobb tuning community, I expect other tuning communities to follow suit out of necessity. I imagine work-arounds will be found, but seems that the end-all solution is another ECU in nearly any tuning community affected by emmissions garbage. (and I don't mean another ECU is the only option, I just mean it seems to be the only tried and true solution that withstands the test of time with ever changing regulations.)

There are a large number of relatively inexpensive handheld scan-tools that can display the Cal ID and CVN. You could probably find some for <$50 that can display Mode 9 data.

That's how the average "non-tuner" would need to do it.

It literally is that easy. It is what I did to pass my emissions test.

Here is my comprehensive write-up overviewing the entire process.

OP someone explained in the other thread how to check your CVN on your ECU using an OBD scanner. Post 48 here. What we don't know is what the stock CVN is supposed to be based on what ECU you have. I would think a tuner would know that info but nobody has come forward with it yet.

Idk why you’re telling me this. The OP is one who doesn’t seem to like this answer. Additionally, there seems to be conflicting answers as to whether this would work “for the average Joe”. For example, when I ran a scanner on my truck (when I had my ECU fuse fail) I had zero codes regarding my tune. Any further digging to get a code to show would have surpassed the “average Joe” threshold imo. Obviously I knew I had a tune so I didn’t try, or care, to get a code to read but as an average Joe I feel like based on these posts it would take some investigation/research to definitively show a tune was done via a normal scanner.

I don't know why you are all so worried about these emission tests. If they can tell I'm sure the dealership can. I'd be much less worried about failing an emissions test than I would be having to fork over money for a major engine repair.

Not being able to register and legally drive your vehicle isn't a hypothetical like a major engine repair denied on warranty due to tune; its inevitable (for people who live in certain states; obviously not a concern for you or many others).

Probably because the odds of failing an emissions test due to a tune are significantly higher than your engine failing due to a tune…

Anyone know if KDmax tune n NV Clark county will pass smog. Being a neighbor State to Cali it wouldn’t surprise me if NV adopted Cali testing. Own a 2019 here in Vegas recently had KDmax 10.0 flash. If so is KDmax working on a work around or is a junkyard ECU the only solution like my Cali neighbors

Because if you fail a test you can replace the ECU and pass the test like the OP in the other thread did. I don't believe Toyota will let you replace the ECU then reinstate your warranty.

I think this is a non-issue now. Adam with Colorado Toyota Tuning said in the other thread that they have now fixed their stock flash. It will now read out the correct CVN so the dealer or emissions testing is none the wiser. If you need warranty work done and are worried about it, get it flashed back to stock and be worry-free, or get two ECUs and swap them.

I'm going to find a used ECU and go that route. Then I know I'm OK, because like I said, I don't think Toyota is going to give you a get out of jail free card.

That is kind of interesting was WA (Cali-lite) recently abandoned all emissions testing. That doesn't say that it won't come back, but it was certainly a surprise as it likely generated a lot of money for the state and that cottage industry.

I'm just answering your previous question. People are more worried about failed emmissions because not being able to register/drive your vehicle legally is far more likely scenario than a blown engine. If you intend to buy a 2nd ECU either way, your point doesn't really matter. Replace the ECU before taking in your blown up truck with that logic.
