    Hey everyone,
I had a tire shop put balancing beads in my tires and it broke one of my tpms sensors. I would like to know which sensor is bad. Does anyone know how you can test or figure out which sensor is bad without buying an expensive reader?

    Thanks!

Ask the shop that broke your TPMS sensor(s) to determine which is broken. I'm not sure they are liable as I do not know what you mean by "put balancing beads in my tires".

It was a year ago. They can just say the battery went dead. They offered to fix it last year but I was too nice about it

Discount tire, and many other tire shops, have a hand held reader thingy that they hold next to the sensor and it reads the ID number of the sensor. Obviously, if it's not working, it's not going to transmit data.

Same thing happened to me last year when I had a shop change a tire for me, although they were adamant they were not liable for any damages

However, that was easy since it was just one tire. I took Toyota and they tried replacing the battery, no luck. I went ahead and bought a new unit.

I would take to your local dealer and have they try the same thing.

Funny enough, I just had one go bad tonight.

Can someone school me a little on these? Are there batteries that can be replaced? I'm at 100k now. Am I better off buying new sensors all around? And what sensors should I get from where? I'd rather just buy them and take them to a small shop and say, "Please pop these in for me."

The mileage is irrelevant, if you own a 2014, you should be getting a little more life. Expect on the average 7 or 8 yrs. Some people even go a lot longer. You may just have a low tire.

The lithium ion batteries inside TPMS sensors may last anywhere from five to 10 years. Five to six years is a more typical lifespan for older TPMS sensors. TPMS sensors don't broadcast a continuous signal but only broadcast when the vehicle is in motion. Even then, the signal is intermittent to conserve battery life.

I checked. They are all dead on for pressure. TPMS light came on while driving home from work. Started blinking and then went solid. I used my gauge to check right away. All were fine. I'm anal about checking weekly. And yes I checked the spare.

Avoid the dealer. They've got a long drawn-out expensive process to do this that'll cost you a fortune.

    Discount Tire all the way.

I recently had a flat tire(to the rim flat) due to a nail and my tpms light wasn't lit on the dash. Changed to the spare and drove for about 20 minutes before the light came on. Now after putting a plug in the tire and checking the pressure in all tires, the light won't turn off. Guessing one of the sensors is shot.

If you are a Costco customer, buy the sensors wherever you like; then take them to Costco. They will install them for a nominal fee.

On a side note, I would love to be given the honor of castrating the person(s) who came up with this wallet-lightening idea...TPMS

Just to update my situation...I took my truck to a shop and they determined I had a bad sensor. A year ago I had a leaky stem and a small time tire shop said they could replace the stem with a rubber one that would attach to the factory TPMS. $20 later I was on the road just fine. Last night the shop said the previous place swapped the whole TPMS out for some shitty little one and now it is bad. So effers took my working TPMS and pulled a switcheroo on me. The shop last night put a new unit in for me but the damn light won't turn off. Any tips? I drove it 50 miles last night at 60mph and a good 60 miles today. They said it would turn off after 20 miles of driving above 20 mph. Not happening.

Did they remember to properly register the new sensor. Shops forgets a lot.

Umm, that would be the people who do not like the idea of “live-and-let-live” and are very keen on the idea of writing and instituting laws that will ‘make’ others live the way they think others should live.

They said they did. Left it running when they gave it to me and said to drive it until light turned off. Drove 40 miles last night and gave up. I pushed the button under the dash this morning until it blinked 3 times this morning and then drove to work but no dice.

That button only resets to my knowledge but does not register, therefore if it is still looking for the old sensor it would continue to flag it.

Gosh these things are an expensive, aggravating, royal PITA. It sounds like maybe they didn't get your truck programmed to the new sensor. "OR", Just wondering, can two different brand, (unmatched), sensors be programmed to the vehicle at the same time, or do you need a matched set of sensors? If they programmed your truck's computer, to read the new sensor that they put in, maybe the computer is now not reading your orig. 3 sensors.

I'll take it back on Monday. They said to bring it back if it didn't turn off.

Still pissed those ass-hats lied to me and took my OEM sensor. The guy said he was just replacing the valve stem. Sack of poo.

that sucks, that is part of the reason I went to the dealership. While I know I probably paid double than another shop, I knew they would get it right and if not would stand by there work.
