I saw this discussed for an earlier year but without an answer. I have a 2022 TRD Sport with manual transmission. Is there a way to disable the hill start assist (where it continues to apply the brakes after you take your foot off the brake pedal)? I don't want to debate the merits of the feature I simply don't like it and want to turn it off. I'm 61 and have driven manuals since I was 16. My last vehicle was a 2019 Nissan Frontier manual which I loved but was totaled when a kid plowed into me texting. I replaced it with the Tacoma because it's the only midsize pickup still available with MT. For the most part I like the Tacoma but I just can't stand the hill start assist. Thanks in advance.

There is no way that anyone has found. I believe it is a function buried in the ABS unit.

Note that any input from the throttle, the slightest tap that doesn't even raise the revs, will disengage the HSA line lock to the rear brakes.

There should be a switch to toggle this function. Unfortunately, Toyota didn't see fit to give us that.

Also, the MT ORs and Pros do not have an HSA function. Likely because they have an entirely different brake system.

You will need to trade it for an older model truck man. Can't do it without replacing pretty much all the control logic with aftermarket.

I have a 22 with MT and never noticed hill start assist? How do I see if I have it? Is there a button?

I'm in the same boat, I'm in the downslope to 70 and have been driving manual transmissions roughly as long as you; not a fan of the HSA (in my wife's Mazda3 or my TRD Sport). That said, I have noticed some inconsistent application of HSA in the Tacoma, some times it happens, and other times it does not; I have yet to diagnose what I did to either cause it to engage or not.

Thanks. I figured the lack of an answer in the earlier thread was a bad sign. I tried releasing it with the gas pedal but it seemed like it took more than a tap which made it worse because then I had to wait for the revs to come back down before releasing the clutch and the truck would start rolling backwards. I'll work on just tapping the gas. I miss my 2019 Frontier it was a joy to drive.

Thanks I got the Sport because I wanted access cab. I see the OR is available in access cab - I wish I had known. I might look into replacing it with an OR.

Before you do you might want to drive an OR; between the two I'd choose the HSA and stiffer suspension of the Sport over the non-HSA with a living room sofa suspension of the Off Road.

It seems to be "re-settable" (to hold) by a quick firm step on the brake when stopped.
That said I really don't ever notice it in daily driving.

    You're welcome.

Same here. MT, long bed, and tow package left me with one choice.

Note that the MT OR only comes in DCSB in the US. ACLB OR is AT only. Canada does get an ACLB MT OR though.

I live in a reasonably hilly portion of New England so on any give drive I am highly likely to come to a stop at a light where I'm facing uphill; I'll give your suggestion a try and see what happens. :)

Trading in a truck solely because it has hill start assist is kinda nuts.

You get used to the function in the vehicle. Every once in a while it kicks in when you’re not expecting and the vehicle will buck a bit because you didn’t give it enough gas. Not the end of the world.

I'm not interested in trading mine and have 85,000mi of enjoyment. Sure, I wish we had the option of the ACLB MT OR back in 2017. Nothing can be done about that.

I don't disagree but it will probably be my last chance to get what I want. As I mentioned I'm 61 and I really expected that my 2019 Frontier would be the last vehicle I would ever buy because I thought MT's had gone extinct. I babied that thing and there wasn't a mark on it until the kid plowed into me. Actually I didn't replace the Frontier directly with the Tacoma - I actually bought a new Ford Ranger. But I absolutely hated the Ranger - and not because it was AT although the I think 10 speed AT was horrible. I had the Ranger just shy of 4 months before trading it for the Tacoma when I learned you could still get MT - but in that case I hated the whole Ranger not just one annoying feature.

Argh. I couldn't get the ACSB MT in Indiana - dealers said availability is by region and you can't get in our region. I had to go to Ohio to get the ACSB. But I don't think I'll be going to Canada though. Thanks.

The problem there is the OR Access Cab is Automatic only, unless you live in Canada.
